Epilogue

Lilith

One Year Later

Iwake in the middle of the night, a cold sweat dripping off my brow.

Confusion radiates from my head, down to my toes, as I open my eyes to the pitch-black room.

I can’t get a handle on my heart sprinting in my chest. Or the feeling of something long, hard, and thick moving between my thighs, hovering dangerously close to my soaked core.

Oh fuck…

Colter’s lying halfway on top of me, with one arm resting around my chest. Our bodies are spooned together, and no doubt that’s why I feel his prodding.

But, as my senses slowly return, I notice he isn’t as vocal as he usually is.

Not a grunt, a groan, or any sound escapes him.

Nor does he react when I start stirring.

He’s still sleeping, and realizing that makes this whole thing so much hotter. Colter Crawford wants me everywhere, even in his dreams.

Well, lucky for him, I’m not about to miss this opportunity.

I rock my hips against him, feeling his swollen head glide through my lips and tease my clit. I bite down on the blanket to stifle my moans, so I don’t wake him.

Sure, I’d much rather have him awake for this, and he’d no doubt prefer it too. But the poor man has so much sleep to catch up on. I can’t take it away from him.

Each thrust becomes easier than the last as my own slick drenches my thighs, but that only makes the game more dangerous. His length grinds against my skin, frictionless, and every back-and-forth motion threatens to split me in half as his cock nudges at my entrance.

What I wouldn’t give to have it happen.

But just as Colter starts to press into me, stretching me wide to take him, the baby monitor on his nightstand blinks its bright green light, and the sound of our daughter’s cries blares out of it.

“What the—“ Colter snaps out of his slumber, just in time to hear me moan.

A groan instantly rips through him, and his hand finds its place over my breasts to tease my nipples. But the lusty fog quickly washes away, as we hear our daughter again.

“Fuck,” he grunts, pulling back once, before slamming his full length deep inside me.

A spasm of pleasure tears through my body, instantly leaving me begging him to stay for one last thrust. But Colter, dutiful dad that he is, slips out of me and gets to his feet.

“I need to see if she’s okay,” he says. A more labored sentence has never been uttered.

“I know,” I whisper back at him. “Oh, the timing…”

He flicks on the nightlight and grabs his robe off a hook on our bedroom door. “What’s that?” His face already shows signs of him bracing himself for the news he doesn’t want to hear.

“If you stuck around, I’d let you put another one inside me.” I smile, and he mirrors it.

“You’d better not fall asleep before I get back then,” he says, sternly. “Or I won’t be the one getting fucked in my sleep.”

He opens the door, and it doesn’t take long for his walk to turn into a run as he hurries down the hallway.

God damn, I love this man.

***

Colter

Normal isn’t a word I’d ever use to describe myself.

For most of my life, that description was far removed from any truth about me.

My mother passed away when I was a boy, and left me in the hands of a man who had no place raising a child.

The only idea I had of family came from the values my brotherhood instilled in me.

I was allowed no friends, lest they corrupt me and veer me off course from the Veil’s designs.

And for the longest time, I didn’t believe I deserved more than what they offered.

“You catch the game yesterday?” Raymond Lincoln asks, handing me an ice-cold beer. He flops into the single recliner to my left, kicking his feet up.

“Nah. Not really a sport kind of guy.” I crack the can open and take a long drink from it.

“What kind of guy are you then?”

I still haven’t gotten used to casual conversation or to answering questions about myself. He’s proven, time and time again, that he has no ulterior motive in asking and just wants to be friendly, but I have a hard-stuck rule to be wary of everyone.

Still, I do enjoy seeing his eyes bulge out of his skull at the fun replies I come up with.

“I’m a hunter.”

And there it is. Right on cue, Lilith and her mother enter the living room.

“Are you traumatizing the poor man again, Colter?” Maybelle says, nestling my daughter against her chest.

She and Raymond have been together for almost the same length of time as Lilith and I have been. I’ve grown fond of her, too. She has a kind way about her.

“Oh, no,” Raymond’s the one to answer for me. “Nothing of the sort.”

“But maybe a little,” I add, and the ladies laugh.

Lilith sets out a few dishes of finger food and other snacks on the coffee table, before joining me on the sofa. We’re about to watch a movie, and you can’t do that without a good helping of snacks to get you through.

Her head falls on my shoulder as the introductory credits begin to roll. Overwhelmed by the sudden warmth her presence brings, I lean in close to her ear and whisper, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” she says it louder, for everyone to hear.

I don’t mind. I haven’t gotten to the point of wearing my emotions on my sleeve, the way she can, yet, but perhaps someday I might.

Because my beliefs have shifted since Lilith walked into my life. She showed me there’s more to it than being a blind follower. It’s a place where we’ve found our own little rituals, like this one tonight, and where we gather as family and friends without expectations.

A place where I learned I can be loved.

In other words, a perfect and normal life.

THE END.
