Chapter Fourteen
“Stop!” I rushed in front of the men and held up my hands. “You can't just go over there and attack them.”
“Why not?” Garret snarled. “That fucking piece of shit assaulted you. And he's our primary mission. It's time we sent his soul back to Hades!”
Gage snarled and pushed past me.
“Yes, great!” I said and ran ahead of Gage. “But at least plan your attack. You've been watching them, right? That's gotta be for a reason. Don't throw all that time and research away just because of me.”
“He is not getting away with hurting you,” Gideon said.
“You are making me feel really special, and I love that, but please, stop and think for a second. Please!” I shoved at Gideon's chest.
All three men stopped as if they were tethered to each other.
“You are going to tell us exactly what happened.” Gage pointed at me. “Understand?”
“Yes, all right,” I said. “Let's go back to the dining room. I'd like to finish my meal.”
That got their attention.
“Are you hungry?” Garret asked as he took my hand. “Do you want something else to eat?”
“No, the pancakes are fine,” I said. “Thank you.”
I walked back to the dining room with them, a little dazed by their response to my careless words. Wow. Just wow. Jake had gotten upset about Silas putting me in danger, but it had been nothing like this. And he relented in the end. I didn't think any of these three would relent where I was concerned. Not. Ever.
There was that feeling again—the good one.
They sat down closer to me this time and watched me take a few bites.
Then Gage lifted his chin at me. “Tell us.”
So, I told them. I outlined the assault from beginning to end. Finishing with, “And that's when you found me.”
“Do you trust her now?” Garret asked Gage.
Gage sighed. “I want to. But I don't know.”
“I understand,” I said. “I feel the same way about you. I want to trust you. But at the same time, I keep thinking about what Silas said.”
“Which lie are you referring to?” Gideon drawled.
“He said that if I was your mate, I would be inclined to side with you. So, this could simply be part of our connection. That spell could be influencing me.”
“But then you'd feel the truth,” Garret said. “You'd know it in your bones.”
“According to you. What if the spell makes me believe your lies?”
“Motherfucker,” Gage growled and shook his head.
“It's fair,” Gideon said. “You don't trust her, and she doesn't trust us.” He looked at me to add, “We have to earn each other's trust.”
“That's usually how trust works,” I said.
“Will you agree to stay here with us, away from Michael and Silas, until we determine, one way or the other, if we can trust each other?” Gage asked.
“That seems reasonable,” I said.
“Very well.” Gage looked at the other two, and they nodded. Then he nudged my plate closer to me. “Finish your food, Indigo Darling. Then it's off to bed with you.”
“Yes, Daddy,” I said, meaning to tease him, but then I saw his instant arousal.
All three of them reacted to my words—a cloud of lust billowing out from them, so palpable that I could practically see it.
My cheeks went hot. “I didn't mean it like that.”
“I think I need a drink,” Garret muttered and headed into the kitchen.
“Bring the bottle,” Gage growled after him.
