Chapter 23 The Bomb Threat
Liu Liu had run away.
I sat in the police car, listening to He Tingzhou's furious voice on the other end of the phone, and comforted him softly. "Since she dared to stuff that thing into my bag, she must have planned her escape long ago. It's only my fault for discovering it too late."
He Tingzhou sighed. "Luckily she's only an intern at the identification center. Otherwise the police would have lost all face. There's a traitor in the ranks."
"But now that the suspect's identity is confirmed, it'll be easier to get Chef Zhang to talk." He Tingzhou continued. "We're finishing up here and coming down soon. Stay in the car and don't run around, understand?"
I nodded repeatedly.
I hung up, but the phone vibrated again. I thought it was He Tingzhou calling back with more instructions, but it was a multimedia message instead.
The instant the image loaded, my pupils shrank sharply.
The photo showed the hallway of Liu Liu's home. The electric meter box was open, and inside were long objects resembling sticks of explosives instead of meters!
【Guess how many police ten pounds of ammonium nitrate explosive can kill?】
【Don't play any tricks. I see every move you make.】
【Get out of the car now and walk over to the express cabinet.】
I let out a soft breath. My fingers tapped the car door as I pondered for a few seconds. Then I opened the door and told the officer staying behind with me, "I'm going to use the bathroom."
The officer looked at me and nodded. "Don't go far."
I forced a smile. "I know."
The express cabinets in Liu Liu's neighborhood were tucked away in a corner. It had been raining the past couple of days, and the night was cold. The neighborhood was almost empty.
I held my umbrella and walked toward the express cabinet, my mind racing to sort out the entire sequence of events.
I guessed that when Liu Liu worked part-time at the bar, she had gotten involved in Chef Zhang's drug sales.
I could see it from her current outfits. In university, Liu Liu's family wasn't well-off. But now she drove a Porsche. He Tingzhou had mentioned that drug profits were extremely high, which I figured matched her lavish lifestyle now.
Next came the boss's death. I thought perhaps he had uncovered Liu Liu and the chef's dealings and was gathering evidence when they caught him and killed him.
Miss Chen's death was likely connected too. She must have discovered something, making Liu Liu and the others decide she had to go.
But one thing puzzled me: the woman in the surveillance footage who looked so much like me.
That had to be Liu Liu in disguise. But was she imitating me or Miss Chen? Imitating Miss Chen made sense if she wanted to frame her for the murder. But if she was imitating me...
Why?
What kind of grudge was worth all that effort to imitate and frame me, making me the culprit?
