Chapter 21

Ipull out my phone for what feels like the hundredth time, hoping against hope that this time, there will be a signal. But as expected, the screen remains stubbornly blank, and it frustratingly feels like it’s mocking my futile attempts to reach the outside world.

I can see the worry etched into Jessy’s face, her brow furrowed and lips pressed into a thin line as she looks at me.

It pains me to see her like this, knowing that I’m partially responsible for getting us into this mess. I was so preoccupied with the thought of spending alone time with her that I didn’t realize how far we had gone from the rest of the group.

But I don’t let my own frustration show. Instead, I try to focus on finding a solution to our predicament.

“We’ll figure something out,” I try to reassure her, my voice laced with determination. “There surely has to be a way to contact help,” I murmur more to myself.

She looks away briefly and then turns to look at me. This time, there’s so much fear in her eyes.

“But what if we’re stuck here indefinitely, at the mercy of the elements, with no one to rescue us? Oh, my God!”The panic is evident in her shaky voice.

“The thought sends a shiver down my spine,” she wraps her arms around herself as if trying to shield herself from some unseen evil.

I can feel my heart clench at the raw fear in her eyes, an ache forming in my chest at the sight of her distress. I want nothing more than to wrap her in my arms and assure her that everything will be okay.

“We won’t be stuck here indefinitely,” I reply firmly. “We’ll find a way to contact help, and we’ll get out of here. I won’t let anything happen to you, Jessy. I promise.”

She gives me a weak smile, slightly shaking her head. “I’m sorry that I sound so pessimistic. It’s just that…” She inhales deeply, “it’s just that I have never been in a situation like this before, and uh…” She chuckles humorlessly. “I think I’ve watched too many horror movies.”

I can’t help but chuckle softly at her admission. “Hey, no need to apologize. We all have our moments of irrational fear,” I reply, offering her a reassuring smile. “But I don’t think now is a good time to remember the horror movies we watched as kids.”

She offers a small smile. “Yeah, you are right. I will try to think happy thoughts.”

“Yeah, you should. This isn’t some scary movie scenario. We’re going to figure this out and laugh about it later, I promise.”

She nods in response.

“We’ll make it through this together,” I say, reaching out to gently squeeze her shoulder. “I won’t leave your side until we’re safe and sound back at the hotel.”

“Thanks.”

“Let’s see if we can find anything useful in this place,” I suggest, gesturing toward the small structure before us.

“Maybe there’s something we can use to signal for help, or at least wait out the storm.”

Rummaging through the sparse supplies in the cabin, we find a few essentials—a blanket, a flashlight with fading batteries, some protein bars, bottles of water, and a first aid kit with basic supplies. It’s not much, but it’s better than nothing.

As we settle down on the musty couch, I hand Jessy a protein bar and a bottle, watching as she takes a few tentative bites.

The rain relentlessly beats against the walls, and it feels like the heavens are opening up and pouring buckets of water on us.

“The fire is going out,” she mentions.

I glance over at the dying fire in the fireplace, its feeble glow barely illuminating the dim interior of the cabin.

“And those were the last pieces of firewood,” I say in a resigned voice.

“How then are we going to stay warm?” she asks, worry written all over her face.

“Well, it’s a good thing that we both have each other,” I say, stretching out my arms.

I meet Jessy’s suspicious gaze with a perplexed frown. “What’s with the look?”

She narrows her eyes slightly, her expression guarded. “I can’t help but wonder if you led us to this place on purpose.”

I can’t help but chuckle at the absurdity of her accusation. “You think I orchestrated getting lost in the middle of nowhere just so I could cozy up with you in a rundown cabin?”

She shrugs, though her eyes still hold a hint of doubt. “I don’t know. Maybe you have some ulterior motive. Are you trying to kidnap me?”

“What? Kidnap you? Why would I want to do that?

She shrugs again, still giving me a serious look. “You tell me. You were the one who kept insisting that I come on this retreat and then led me away from the rest of the team.”

“And that’s because it is beneficial for your career growth. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but you aren’t the only junior staff member invited to this retreat. So, stop making it seem like I’m always giving you preferential treatment, because I’m not! And no, I’m not trying to get you kidnapped or whatever it is that you have going on in your head.”

I can feel frustration bubbling up inside me as Jessy continues to entertain these ridiculous suspicions. “Seriously, Jessy? Do you honestly think I would go through all this trouble just to kidnap you? What do I stand to gain?”

She meets my gaze with a stubborn tilt of her chin. “I don’t know what to think anymore. All I know is that we’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, and you’re the one who insisted on bringing me here.’’

I let out an exasperated sigh, running a hand through my hair in frustration. “For the last time, Jessy, I brought you here because it’s part of your job. I thought it would be a valuable opportunity for you to network and learn from your peers. It has nothing to do with kidnapping or whatever wild scenario you’re concocting in your head.”

I shake my head, incredulous. “Believe me, Jessy, if I had a choice in the matter, we’d be back at the hotel enjoying a hot meal and a comfortable bed right about now.”

I reach out to gently place a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s understandable. We’re both out of our element here.”

She offers me a tentative smile, her guard seems to begin to lower. “Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

With the tension between us momentarily diffused, we turn our attention back to the fading fire.

As we sit in tense silence, I can’t help but wonder how we ended up in this absurd situation and how we’re going to get out of it. But one thing’s for certain—kidnapping was never part of the plan.

I watch as the last embers of the fire slowly flicker out, leaving us in the dim light, save for the occasional flash of lightning illuminating the cabin.

The storm rages on outside, the sound of rain battering against the windows growing louder by the minute. Glancing over at Jessy, I notice her huddled form, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as she shivers from the cold.

“You’re shivering,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper.

She looks up at me, her expression a mixture of exhaustion and discomfort. “I’ll be fine,” she replies, her teeth chattering slightly.

I hesitate for a moment before speaking again. “You can come closer if you want,” I offer, then rephrase, “I think you should be closer. We can share body heat to stay warm.”

She shakes her head, though I can see the reluctance in her eyes. “I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not,” I insist. “You could catch pneumonia and then die. I don’t want your death on my conscience.”

“There’s no proven scientific connection between being cold and catching pneumonia because of the cold.”

I chuckle softly. “Alright, Dr. Martin, if you say so. But I’m still not convinced. Come on, just for a little while. It’ll help keep us both warm.”

She hesitates for a moment, chewing on her lower lip as she considers my offer. Finally, with a resigned sigh, she scoots closer, her shoulder pressing against mine.

“There, isn’t that better?” I ask, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

She nods, though I can still sense a hint of tension in her body. “Yeah, it’s...tolerable,” she replies, a hint of amusement in her voice.

“Tolerable? I’m giving you warmth, something that money can’t buy, and you say it’s tolerable? Well, I suppose I should be flattered that my body heat is at least tolerable.”

She lets out a small laugh, the tension in her body easing slightly. “Okay, okay, I’ll admit it’s more than tolerable. It’s...cozy,” she concedes, leaning into my side slightly.

“That’s more like it,” I reply with a grin, feeling a sense of satisfaction at having managed to coax a genuine smile out of her.

As we sit, pressed close together for warmth, I can feel the heat radiating off her body, and it ignites a fire within me that I struggle to contain.

I try to distract myself by focusing on the sound of the rain outside. But despite my best efforts, my thoughts keep drifting back to the woman beside me, her presence is a magnetic force that pulls me in despite my better judgment.

I steal a glance at her from the corner of my eye, taking in the way her hair falls softly around her face, the delicate curve of her lips, and the gentle rise and fall of her chest as she breathes.

The urge to reach out and touch her face, to explore every inch of her, threatens to consume me, and I find myself struggling to maintain control.

I clear my throat, trying to dispel the tension that hangs heavy in the air.

“Um, Jessy...are you, uh, okay?” I manage to choke out, my voice strained with the effort of suppressing my desires. I should be asking myself if I’m okay, because I’m clearly not.

She meets my gaze, her eyes dark and unreadable in the dim light of the cabin. “Yeah, I’m fine,” she replies, her voice barely above a whisper.

As the tension between us reaches its peak, I”m unable to resist any longer. Leaning in closer, I close the distance between us, my heart pounding in my chest as our lips meet in a tentative kiss.

For a moment, time stands still, leaving only the sensation of her soft lips against mine. The kiss is electric, sending a jolt of desire coursing through my veins as I lose myself in the intoxicating warmth of her embrace.

Jessy brings up her hand to my hair and starts weaving her fingers through, a throaty moan coming from her.

I trace my fingers lightly along her jawline, savoring the softness of her skin beneath my touch. Her hands roam freely over my chest, sending shivers down my spine as she explores every inch of me with a hunger that matches my own.

As our lips move in perfect harmony, I feel a surge of electricity coursing through my veins, igniting a fire that threatens to consume us both. The tension between us grows with each kiss, building to a fever pitch that leaves me dizzy with desire.

With each touch, each caress, I feel myself losing control, swept away by a passion that I can no longer deny. And as our bodies press together in a desperate embrace, I know that there is no turning back.

Breathless, Jessy pulls away, her chest rising and falling with each ragged breath. “We shouldn’t be doing this,” she whispers, her voice barely audible above the pounding of my own heart.

I reach out to caress her cheek, my fingertips tracing the line of her jaw as I search her eyes for any sign of hesitation. “I know,” I reply softly, my voice tinged with longing. “But I can’t seem to help myself.”

She hesitates for a moment, uncertainty flickering in her eyes, and then she leans back in, her lips seeking mine with a hunger that mirrors my own.

And as we lose ourselves in the heat of the moment once more, I know that this is where we belong, together in each other’s arms.
