Chapter 28
As we gather around the table at Ethan and Amy’s mom’s place, the warm aroma of home-cooked food fills the air, enveloping me in a sense of comfort and familiarity. Amy and Ethan’s mom welcomed me with open arms, making me feel like part of the family.
Carol serves us a delicious meal of roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans, and as we dig in, the conversation flows effortlessly.
She regales us with stories from Ethan and Amy’s childhood, sharing anecdotes that make me laugh and feel closer to them.
Amy and I have gotten closer over the past few weeks, and when she invited me to have dinner with her and her mom, I was a little hesitant about the offer because I didn’t want to get too close to Ethan’s family, as I’m still not sure what I want to do about my relationship with him.
Our last conversation in my apartment the morning after he spent the night has had me thinking all week.
I can’t deny the undeniable chemistry between us, how he makes me laugh, and how his touch sends shivers down my spine.
But beneath it all, there’s a nagging voice of doubt, a voice that reminds me of all the warnings I received as a young girl about men like Ethan.
Men like Ethan are heartbreakers. They’re smooth talkers, masters of charm, but ultimately, they leave a trail of broken hearts in their wake.
And as much as I want to believe that Ethan is different, that he’s sincere in his feelings for me, I can’t shake the fear that I’m setting myself up for heartache.
But then again, what if I’m the one standing in the way of my own happiness? What if I’m letting my past experiences dictate my future instead of giving myself a chance to truly be happy?
What if Ethan is right and we could make this work?
It’s a terrifying thought to invest time, energy, and emotions into something that may ultimately crumble beneath me.
What if I open myself up to Ethan and allow myself to be vulnerable, only to have my heart shattered into a million irreparable pieces?
I don’t have the answers to these questions, but one thing’s for sure—I can’t keep running away from what could be.
I owe it to myself to at least consider the possibility of happiness, even if it means taking a leap of faith into the unknown.
“So, Jessica,” Ethan’s mom’s voice pulls me out of my thoughts. “How is it working with Ethan as your boss? Do you enjoy working for him?”
Carol’s question catches me off guard, and for a moment, I struggle to find the right words.
“It’s...uh, it’s been good,” I reply, a nervous smile playing at the corners of my lips. “Ethan has been really supportive, and I’ve learned a lot working at the Grand Princeton.”
She nods, her expression warm and welcoming. “I’m glad to hear that. I know my son can be a handful sometimes, but he’s always had a good head on his shoulders when it comes to work.”
Amy chimes in, her tone teasing. “Yeah, but don’t let him fool you. He’s a softie at heart.”
Ethan rolls his eyes, but there’s a hint of amusement in his expression. “Thanks for that, sis.”
Their mom chuckles, her eyes twinkling with affection. “I forgot to mention that he can sometimes be quite grumpy, too.”
“You guys are the bane of my existence,” he mumbles.
From the way they interact, it’s clear that his family is close-knit and comfortable with each other’s presence.
As the meal continues, I find myself relaxing in the company of Ethan’s family, feeling a sense of belonging—much to my surprise.
Throughout the meal, I can’t help but notice Ethan’s occasional glances in my direction. Each time our eyes meet, he slowly looks away.
After dinner, we decide to watch a movie, and Ethan’s mom convinces him to join us. As we settle into the cozy living room, I find myself seated next to him on the plush couch.
Amy and their mom fuss over the movie selection, eventually settling on a classic rom-com.
Throughout the movie, Ethan’s presence beside me is both comforting and distracting.
I catch him stealing glances in my direction every now and then, his eyes lingering on me for longer than necessary before darting away when I meet his gaze. It’s as if he’s trying to say something without uttering a word.
Despite my best efforts to focus on the movie, my mind keeps drifting back to Ethan, and the magnetic pull of his presence is impossible to ignore.
As the credits roll and the lights flicker back to life, I find myself lost in a sea of conflicting emotions.
Part of me longs to lean into Ethan’s arms, to surrender to the intoxicating allure of what could be. But another part of me hesitates, the fear of the unknown holding me back from taking that leap of faith.
“Jessica, why don’t you just spend the night?” Carol asks me as she starts to clean up.
“Uh…I’m not sure I…”
“We have enough rooms. Please, spend the night, dear. Ethan is spending the night too,” she turns to Ethan. “Right, Ethan?”
“Uh…yeah, I’m spending the night.”
“Come on, Jessy, please spend the night,” Amy pleads.
“I…I don’t know,” I finally manage to stammer out.
Amy gives me a pleading look, her eyes wide with earnestness. “Please, Jessy. It would mean a lot to me. Besides, it’s getting late, and I wouldn’t want you to drive back alone.”
Ethan’s mom chimes in, her tone gentle yet persuasive. “She’s right, dear. It’s late, and it’s safer to stay the night. Plus, it would give us a chance to spend more time together. We are enjoying your company.”
I consider their words, the warmth of their hospitality tugging at my heartstrings. Despite my reservations, I can’t deny the allure of the idea. The prospect of spending more time with Ethan and his family fills me with a sense of longing I can’t quite shake.
“Okay,” I finally relented, a soft smile gracing my lips. “I’ll stay.”
We all share a bottle of wine together before we bid each other goodnight and Amy shows me to one of the guest rooms.
As the rest of the house settles into slumber, I find myself unable to shake off the restlessness that grips me.
Tossing and turning in bed only seems to worsen my unease, so I quietly slip out of the room and make my way to the balcony.
The cool night air greets me as I step outside, wrapping around me like a comforting embrace.
Leaning against the railing, I gaze out at the city skyline spread out before me, the twinkling lights of the buildings casting a soft glow against the dark night sky.
Taking in deep breaths of the crisp air, I feel a sense of calm wash over me, the quiet solitude of the night offering a much-needed reprieve from the chaos of my racing thoughts.
Closing my eyes, I let myself be enveloped by the stillness of the night, allowing it to quiet the turmoil within me.
Lost in my own thoughts, I don’t notice the sound of footsteps approaching until Ethan’s voice breaks through the silence.
“Would you mind if I join you?”
I turn to find Ethan standing beside me, a blanket draped over his arm. His warm smile instantly puts me at ease, and I shake my head in response to his question.
“Not at all,” I reply, grateful for the company. As he wraps the blanket around my shoulders, his touch sends a shiver down my spine, the warmth of his proximity sending tingles of awareness coursing through me.
“Thanks,” I murmur, pulling the blanket tighter around me as I settle back against the railing. Ethan joins me, his presence a comforting anchor in the midst of my swirling thoughts.
After a while, Ethan breaks the silence, his voice gentle yet resolute. “Jessy, I know we’ve talked about this before, about being just friends. But I can’t shake the feeling that there’s something more between us. I want to be with you—to date you and explore what that is.”
His words hang in the air, and I’m momentarily speechless. Part of me wants to believe that he’s sincere, that there could be something real between us.
But another part is hesitant, wary of the potential consequences of crossing that line.
“Ethan…” I begin, my voice is hesitant as I search for the right words. “I...I don’t know what to say.”
He reaches out, gently taking my hand in his, his touch warm and comforting. “Just know that I care about you, Jessy. And I’m willing to take things slow, to see where this goes.”
I meet his gaze, seeing the sincerity and warmth in his eyes, and for a fleeting moment, I allow myself to entertain the possibility of something more.
“What if we go out on one date—just one.”
Ethan’s request catches me off guard, and for a moment, I’m at a loss for words. The idea of going on a date with him, just the two of us, feels simultaneously thrilling and terrifying.
“I...I don’t know, Ethan,” I reply, my voice tinged with uncertainty. “I mean, I appreciate the offer, but…”
He reaches out, gently placing a hand on my shoulder, his touch warm and reassuring. “Jessy, I understand you’re hesitant,” he says softly. “But I promise, it’ll just be one date. No strings attached, no expectations. Just two people getting to know each other better.”
I meet his gaze, seeing the sincerity and warmth in his eyes, and I find myself slowly nodding in agreement. “Okay,” I say softly. “One date. But just one, okay?”
A smile spreads across his face, and I can’t help but feel a flutter of excitement in my chest. Maybe, just maybe, this could be the start of something new and wonderful.
“Great.” He throws his arms open and envelopes me in a hug. I find myself melting into it, feeling a sense of comfort in his presence.
“You won’t regret it, Jessy,” he whispers, his voice filled with genuine excitement. “I promise you, we’ll have an amazing time together.”
Despite my initial reservations, I can’t deny the flutter of excitement building in my chest at the prospect of going out on an actual date with him.
As the night wears on, we remain ensconced in a comfortable silence, the only sound being the gentle rustle of the night breeze.
Ethan’s arms provide a sense of security as we gaze up at the twinkling stars above, lost in the vast expanse of the night sky.
Time seems to slip away unnoticed as we share this quiet moment together, each lost in our own thoughts, yet connected by the simple act of being together. There is a sense of peace and contentment in this shared space.
But eventually, the weariness of the day catches up with me, my eyelids growing heavy with sleep. With a reluctant sigh, I break the silence, murmuring softly.
“I think it’s time for bed.”
“All right then,” Ethan nods, giving me a kiss on my forehead before releasing me from his embrace as we both rise to our feet. With one last lingering glance at the stars above, I turn to make my way back inside.
“Goodnight, Jessy.”
“Goodnight, Ethan.”
