Glossary
of species of the Aurelian Isles:
Green Dragon: Green dragons were most notable for the large, waving crest or fin that started at the dragon's nose and ran the entire length of the dragon's body. They also had exceptionally long, slender forked tongues. Green dragons' scales did not fully harden, granting them greater flexibility than other chromatic dragons. They also had particularly long legs and elongated necks. Green Dragons are known for being poison masters and assassins. Most famous nest is Risedale where the Shadowblades are trained by Abaddon Bladesong, head of the Shadowblades. Breath Weapon: Acid
Red Dragon: They were supremely confident of their own abilities and were prone to making snap decisions without any forethought. The largest and most powerful of the chromatic dragons. Red dragons were physically distinguished by their enormous size and wingspan, which was the widest of all dragons, both in absolute size and relative to body length. Most Famous nest was the Marzana nest where King Klauth Ragnar reigned from until his capture. Breath Weapon: Fire
Black Dragon: Black dragons appeared abnormally slender in comparison to other chromatic dragons—wiry, but not gaunt. Physically, they were most distinguished by their horns, which protruded from the sides of their heads and wrapped around, projecting forward. A large frill adorned the upper part of the neck. Most Famous nest was Blackhaven where Thauglor Mithrun lived until his capture. Breath Weapon: Acid
Blue Dragon: Also known as storm dragons, were a breed of chromatic true dragon. Their breath weapon was a line of lightning or a large electrical discharge. Blue dragons were physically distinguished by the single large horn protruding from their heads and by their ears, which were rather large and frilled. Semi-hard scales. The neck was short and broad. The tail was thick and flat. No Famous Nests associated with this species. Breath Weapon: Lightning.
Bronze Dragon: While most of its body was a reflective bronze color, the wings were often tipped with green. The dragon had four large horns on each side of their heads, three protruding from each cheek and one from the top of their head, pointing back towards the tail. A large frill ran down the upper part of its neck. Breath Weapon: Cone of repulsion energy
Iron Dragon: were intelligent and deadly dragons. They were the most powerful of the ferrous dragons. They had broad, almost shovel-shaped heads with multiple thick, backwards-pointing horns, and large plates that resembled shark fins ran down their spine. They possessed the hardest scales of any dragon to exist. Breath Weapon: a cloud of sleep gas, and cone of lightning.
Fairie Dragon: Faerie dragons were extremely small in comparison to their large metallic or chromatic dragon cousins—about the size of a cat. Each had an iridescent coat of scales that reflected all colors of the rainbow, predominantly reflecting one particular color which changed with age. They had a long, prehensile tail and platinum-colored, butterfly-like wings. Breath Weapon: Unknown
Gem Dragon: were friendly, curious dragons. They enjoyed conversing with other creatures but sometimes came into conflict with other dragons due to shared preferences in habitats. They were the smallest of the gem dragons and had translucent, crystalline scales. Breath Weapon: a blinding cone of white light.
Phoenix: Are enormous birds with brightly colored feathers ranging from orange to red and violet, and blue-violet beaks and claws. Their talons had the consistency of diamonds. Their eyes were a glowing ruby color. A phoenix's body was naturally bright and shed its own light. Phoenix bodies were almost immaterial, composed of flame taking solid shape.
Greater Basilisk: A phenomenally lethal creature, direct eye contact with a Basilisk would result in instantaneous death, but an indirect look would merely render the victim Petrified. Highly venomous. True serpent basilisk with six eyes and can grow to be over 40ft long. Scales are harder than most armor, only a titanium dragon’s talons can cut the hide.
Lesser Basilisk : Similar to a greater Basilisk but can only get to be about twenty foot long and softer scales. Can only petrify its victims. No venom to speak of.
Green Hag: Like all hags, the strength behind a green hag's frail physique was not to be underestimated, for not only were they resistant to magic but their calloused flesh made them resistant to physical attacks and their hardiness extended to their flesh-rending claws. A green hag's touch could sap strength with even the slightest brush.
Manticore: were true monsters. They were giant beasts with the bodies of lions, the wings of a dragon, the head of a man, and a tail that ended in a mass of deadly spikes. The coloration of these various body parts was similar to that of their base creature. The mouth of a manticore was full of rows and rows of razor-sharp teeth, similar to that of a great white shark. It used these teeth to feed upon any creature the manticore could catch, be it animal or human. Tail holds a paralytic venom.
Gargoyle: appeared to be winged statues of demon-like humanoids. These creatures could stand motionless for long periods of time, which added to the facade of their statue-like appearance. Nearly indestructible, able to roam about in the daytime with a daylight charm. Without the charm they are forced to become nocturnal.
Nightmare: their warhorse-like exterior was revealed to be entirely superficial. They had huge heads, fangs like vipers, and malevolent dark eyes often illuminated by red-hot flames, and they sprouted orange fire when their nostrils flared. Wreathed in fire, their manes were wild and their tails unkempt. The titular power of nightmares was their ability to appear in dreams or cause nightmares.
Gryphon: A griffon had the body of a lion with the head and wings of an eagle. The forelimbs of the gryphon were often like those of an eagle, ending in sharp talons, but this was not always the case. Just as lions and eagles had varying physical characteristics based on where in the world they are found.
Fire Drake: Fire drakes resembled lithe, 12-foot-long dragons with fiery yellow eyes and scales that ranged in color from blood red to bright vermilion.
Ambush Drake: These creatures had elongated jaws and muscular builds, though their wings were quite stunted for their size. These wings were only used, when necessary, the ambush drake instead preferring to get around on its four legs.
Sphynx : a race of intelligent, immortal magical beasts. It was said that they once held a vast kingdom given to them by the gods in an effort to teach mortals the way of truth. The sphinxes had their own methods, however, by teaching mortals to think for themselves with riddles and parables.
Gorgon: Greater medusae were quite rare, being born at only one in ten births. Like their more common kin, they had heads of living snakes and bodies covered in fine scales, but instead of a woman's lower body, they had snake tails.
Displacer Beast: are large cat-like creatures, sometimes described as panther- or puma-like with six legs and a pair of tentacles 5?feet long sprouting from their shoulders. The tentacles ended in pads with sharp horny edges, brownish yellow in color. They were covered in a pelt of blue-black fur. Displacer beasts were generally strong creatures, and their tentacle barbs were hard enough to punch through pure steel armor. Able to phase over long distances in an extremely short period of time.
Watch Spiders: breed of huge spiders that were raised and trained to obey a master. Watch spiders were fast, both when running and climbing webs or walls. They could leap up to 30?feet. A single strand of their silk was strong enough to support their weight plus one additional medium-sized creature. If allowed to spin a web, they could know the location of any creature that touched their web. Some were bred to have a paralyzing venom, the paralytic effect had an onset time of one to two minutes and then full-body paralysis set in for twenty minutes to over an hour. The victim could see and hear, but not move or speak and would eventually die.
Asperii: also known as wind steeds, were magical horses that possessed keen minds and telepathic powers and the ability to fly. Asperii appeared as normal horses, averaging around 8?feet (2.4?meters) tall. They had hides that were dun, gray, or white and long manes that were most often light gray, silver, or white. Asperii were sentient creatures, being more intelligent than most humans. They were usually very gentle, except when it came to their enemies.
