13. Matters of the Heart
Ethan
The truth was, he was distracted. Distracted by the way Liam’s smile made his heart skip a beat, by the way his skin tingled every time they accidentally brushed against each other.
It was a feeling he wasn’t used to, a vulnerability that he had spent his entire life trying to avoid. Ethan Hawke was the Arcana, the cocky, confident vigilante who always had a plan and always got the job done. He didn’t do feelings, didn’t do attachments.
But with Liam, everything was different. The firefighter had gotten under his skin in a way that no one else ever had, had made him question everything he thought he knew about himself.
As he entered the headquarters, still lost in thought, he was immediately confronted by Zoe and Marcus. They were waiting for him in the main room, their arms crossed and their expressions serious.
“We need to talk,” Zoe said, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Ethan raised an eyebrow, trying to play it off with his usual cockiness. “If this is about the coffee, I promise I’ll start bringing enough for everyone.”
But Zoe wasn’t having it. “Cut the crap, Ethan. We know what’s going on with you and Liam.”
Ethan felt his heart skip a beat, a flicker of panic rising in his chest. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said, his voice tight.
Marcus sighed, his expression softening slightly. “Ethan, we’re not blind. We’ve seen the way you look at him, the way you act around him. It’s okay to have feelings for someone.”
But Ethan shook his head, his jaw clenching with stubborn denial. “I don’t have feelings for Liam,” he said, his voice rough. “He’s just a colleague, a partner in this investigation. Nothing more.”
Zoe snorted, rolling her eyes. “Right. And I’m the Queen of England. Come on, Ethan. You can’t fool us.”
Ethan felt a surge of anger rising in his chest, a defensive wall slamming into place. “Look, even if I did have feelings for Liam, which I don’t, it wouldn’t matter. We’re in the middle of a dangerous case here, and I can’t afford to be distracted by personal bullshit.”
Marcus frowned, his expression concerned. “Ethan, we’re not saying you can’t have feelings for Liam. We’re just worried about what it might mean for the investigation, and for you.”
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, frustration and confusion warring in his chest. “I appreciate the concern, guys. But I’ve got this under control. Liam and I are just friends, and that’s all we’ll ever be.”
Zoe raised an eyebrow, her expression skeptical. “Friends? Really, Ethan? You expect us to believe that?”
She leaned forward, her eyes boring into his with an intensity that made him squirm. “I’ve known you for years, and I’ve never seen you light up the way you do when Liam’s around. It’s like he flips a switch in you, brings out a side of you that I didn’t even know existed.”
Ethan scoffed, trying to play it off. “You’re imagining things, Zo.”
Zoe shook her head, a knowing smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “You know, I saw Liam talking to that cute firefighter the other day. The one with the dimples and the killer abs. They looked pretty cozy, if you know what I mean.”
Ethan felt a sudden surge of jealousy, hot and sharp in his chest. The thought of Liam flirting with some other guy, laughing at his jokes and letting him get close… it made his blood boil in a way that he couldn’t quite explain.
“What the fuck are you talking about?” he snapped, his voice coming out harsher than he intended.
“Just what I thought, you’re smitten.” Zoe smirked.
“Liam can talk to whoever he wants. It’s none of my business.”
The idea of Liam with someone else made him feel like he was being stabbed in the gut, like he was losing something precious that he hadn’t even realized he wanted.
Marcus sighed, his expression sympathetic. “Ethan, listen to me. I know you’re scared. I know you’re used to being the lone wolf, the guy who doesn’t need anyone else. But maybe this thing with Liam… maybe it’s not a weakness. Maybe it’s a strength.”
Ethan frowned, confused. “What do you mean?”
Marcus leaned forward, his eyes intense. “Think about it. All your life, you’ve been fighting for something bigger than yourself. Justice, freedom, the chance to make a difference in the world. But what if Liam is the thing that makes it all worth it? What if he’s the reason you keep going, even when things get tough?”
Ethan felt a lump forming in his throat, a sudden rush of emotion that he couldn’t quite contain. Because as much as he hated to admit it, Marcus was right. Liam Quinn had become more than just a partner, more than just a friend. He was the reason Ethan got up in the morning, the reason he kept fighting even when the odds seemed insurmountable.
“Fuck,” he muttered, running a hand over his face. “I don’t know what to do, guys. I’ve never felt like this before. It’s like he’s in my head, under my skin. I can’t shake him, no matter how hard I try.”
Zoe reached out, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Ethan, it’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to feel vulnerable. But don’t let your fear hold you back from something that could be really special.”
She grinned, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Besides, have you seen the way Liam looks at you? That boy is thirsty as hell. You’d have to be blind not to see it.”
Ethan felt a flush creeping up his neck, a sudden warmth spreading through his chest. Because as much as he tried to deny it, he knew that Zoe was right. He had seen the way Liam looked at him, the heat in his gaze and the hunger in his touch. It was like a live wire, a current of electricity that crackled between them every time they were in the same room.
“Alright, fine,” he said, throwing up his hands in defeat. “You win. I have feelings for Liam. Are you happy now?”
Zoe grinned, punching him lightly on the arm. “Ecstatic. Now we just have to figure out how to get you two idiots together without blowing up the city in the process.”
Ethan groaned, burying his face in his hands. “Fuck my life. I’m never going to hear the end of this, am I?”
As much as he hated to admit it, it felt good to finally say the words out loud. To acknowledge the depth of his feelings for Liam, and to know that his friends had his back no matter what.
But even as relief washed over him, Ethan felt a new fear gripping his heart. The fear of losing Liam, either to the dangers of their mission or to the complications of a romantic relationship.
“What if I fuck this up?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “What if my feelings for him cloud my judgment, make me take stupid risks that put us both in danger?”
Zoe’s expression softened, her eyes filled with understanding. “Ethan, you can’t let fear control you. Yes, there are risks, but there are also rewards. And I’ve never seen you back down from a challenge before.”
Ethan sighed, his mind drifting back to a past he’d tried so hard to forget. A past where he’d let himself be vulnerable, let himself fall deeply in love, only to have his heart shattered into a million pieces.
He could still remember the pain of that betrayal, the way it had felt like his entire world was crumbling around him. He had been young and naive, so sure that he had found the one, the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
Ethan’s mind drifted back to a time he’d tried so hard to forget, a memory that still haunted him in his darkest moments.
He had been young and in love, so sure that he had found the one person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. His fiancé, Alex, had been everything he’d ever wanted - smart, funny, kind, and utterly gorgeous.
They had been planning their wedding, dreaming of a future together filled with laughter and love. Ethan had never been happier, never felt more complete.
But there was one secret he had kept from Alex, one truth he had been too afraid to reveal. Ethan was a mutant, born with powers that set him apart from the rest of the world.
He had always been careful to hide his abilities, to keep that part of himself locked away from prying eyes. But as his love for Alex grew deeper, so too did the guilt and shame he felt at keeping such a huge part of himself hidden.
One night, after a particularly close call with a group of anti-mutant protesters, Ethan had finally worked up the courage to come clean. With shaking hands and a pounding heart, he had revealed his secret to Alex, waiting with bated breath for his reaction.
But the response he got was not the one he had been hoping for.
Alex’s face had twisted with shock and disgust, his eyes filling with a hatred that Ethan had never seen before. “You’re one of them,” he had spat, his voice dripping with venom. “A freak, a monster. How could you keep this from me? How could you lie to me all this time?”
Ethan had tried to explain, had begged Alex to understand that his powers didn’t define him, that he was still the same person he had always been. But Alex wouldn’t listen, his mind already made up.
“I can’t be with a mutant,” he had said, his voice cold and unfeeling. “I can’t marry someone who’s been lying to me, someone who’s not even human. It’s over, Ethan. We’re done.”
With those words, Alex had walked out of Ethan’s life, leaving him shattered and alone. Ethan had felt like his entire world was crumbling around him, like he would never be whole again.
It had taken him years to recover from that betrayal, to rebuild the walls around his heart and learn to trust again. And even now, the scars of that heartbreak lingered, a constant reminder of the pain that came with opening himself up to love.
As Ethan pulled himself out of the memory, he felt a renewed sense of fear and hesitation. If Alex, the person he had loved more than anything, couldn’t accept him for who he was, then how could he ever expect Liam to be different?
But even as the doubts swirled in his mind, Ethan knew that he couldn’t let his past control him forever. He had to be willing to take that leap, to trust that what he and Liam had was real and worth fighting for.
The firefighter had snuck past his defenses, had wormed his way into Ethan’s heart without him even realizing it. And now, the thought of losing him, of opening himself up to that kind of pain again, was almost too much to bear.
“I’ve been hurt before,” Ethan said, his voice rough with emotion. “Badly. And I swore I would never let it happen again. But with Liam… it’s different. He makes me want to take that risk, to put my heart on the line one more time.”
Marcus leaned forward, his expression serious. “Ethan, I know you’re scared. And I know your past has made it hard for you to trust, to let yourself be vulnerable. But you can’t let that define you forever. You have to be willing to take a chance, to open yourself up to the possibility of love again.”
Ethan felt a lump forming in his throat, a sudden rush of emotion that threatened to overwhelm him. Because as much as he wanted to deny it, Marcus was right. He couldn’t let his past dictate his future, couldn’t let his fear of getting hurt keep him from something that could be truly special.
“You’re right,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t let my past control me anymore. I have to be willing to take that leap, to trust that what Liam and I have is real and worth fighting for.”
Zoe grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “Damn right, it is. And if you don’t make a move soon, I might just have to step in and play matchmaker myself.”
Ethan groaned, burying his face in his hands. “Please, Zo, I’m begging you. Let me handle this my own way, in my own time. The last thing I need is you meddling in my love life.”
But even as he said it, he couldn’t help but feel a flicker of warmth in his chest. Because as much as Zoe’s teasing drove him crazy sometimes, he knew that it came from a place of love, of genuine concern for his happiness.
“Alright, fine,” Zoe said, throwing up her hands in mock surrender. “I’ll back off. For now. But don’t think I won’t be watching you like a hawk, Hawke. If you don’t make a move soon, I might just have to take matters into my own hands.”
Ethan rolled his eyes, but he couldn’t quite suppress the smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “I’d like to see you try, Zo. I’m the master of evasion, remember? You’ll never catch me.”
Marcus chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. “Alright, you two, enough bickering. We’ve got work to do. Ethan, just promise us that you’ll think about what we said, okay? Don’t let your fear hold you back from something that could be really great.”
Ethan nodded, his expression turning serious. “I promise, Marcus. I won’t let my past define me anymore. And I won’t let my feelings for Liam compromise our mission, either. We’re going to take down Genexis and save those mutants, no matter what it takes.”
As they settled back into their work, poring over the evidence and planning their next move, Ethan couldn’t help but feel a new sense of determination washing over him. Yes, he was scared. Yes, the thought of opening himself up to love again was terrifying.
