NICO
Serenity finally came clean about her past. Trying not to explode while she explained in graphic detail how mobsters terrorized her family. The second she fell asleep; I stalked into a guest bathroom down the hall and released a quiet scream. They broke my woman’s mind.
Listening to Serenity break down the horrors from that day only made me want to send my men to burn both those fuckers’ compounds to the ground with their families inside.
Now I understand why she pushed me away so hard. Fuck, she trusted me to love her, and I failed with that stupid bet. I only proved to her she could never be happy.
I admit the most shocking part of her confession was when she said she couldn’t have children.
My heart felt like it would burst out of my chest. Did I change out her birth control for nothing?
Serenity said she won’t bring a child into this world.
When she finds out she’s pregnant, will she have an abortion?
Shit, this plan to start our family backfired. To add insult to injury, she won’t willingly marry me. What the fuck am I going to do?
Before Serenity had gotten sick, we hadn’t gotten the chance to spend time with each other. She was busy tormenting two people, while I had captured a Russian mobster and was torturing him.
I will no longer get info from Fitz. Can’t put him in danger. He’s helped enough.
Somehow, when Serenity tells me she’s pregnant, I’ll try my best to persuade her to keep our child.
My phone vibrates in my pocket. I stand from the chair and grin at my guest. “Hang around for a bit. I have to take this call.” I pat the asshole’s bloody face before stepping away. He dangles from a rope in the middle of my off-site warehouse.
I have to admit Russians are the toughest bastards. He won’t give me a thing about his Bratva boss, Aleksandr Novikoff.
I remove my leather glove and tap the earbud in my ear. “What’s up?”
“Sir, Serenity went to her doctor’s appointment. When she vacated the office, she appeared upset.”
My heart lurches in my chest. “I see. Thank you.” I disconnect the call.
I didn’t know if she found out she was pregnant or that she wasn’t sick. I’d call her later, then pop by and check on her.
Later that night, I sit across the street from Serenity’s mansion. A few lights are on throughout the house.
I glance at the messages I sent Serenity a couple of hours ago.
Me: How did it go at your doctor’s visit?
Me: Do you have the flu?
Nothing.
I press Serenity’s contact and hit the speaker button.
“The number you have dialed is no longer in service.”
“What the fuck?” I grit out.
Instead of reaching out to Fitz, I swallow my pride and hit Javier’s contact info. His phone rings three times.
“Javier here.”
“Javier, this is Nico.”
He chuckles. “You’re desperate if you’re calling me.”
I blow out a frustrated breath. “Serenity’s phone is disconnected. What’s going on?”
“She relieved Fitz and me of our duties. She’s gone.”
My heart drops to my feet.
“What do you mean, gone?”
“She left town…for good.”
“Is she in danger?” I ask.
“I can’t answer that. You’ll have to talk to Mr. Cichello.”
“Thanks. Goodbye.” The phone slips from my hand, falling into my lap.
My stomach churns violently. Something happened today. Something so terrible that it pushed her to make a drastic decision.
She walked away from everything.
She walked away from me.
The woman I love is gone.
Nico, she told you she could never be with you. Was this her way of finally ending us?
Suddenly, I feel dead inside.
