Chapter 39 Nico
NICO
Idug my fingers into my biceps and clamped down and squeezed, trying to massage away the strange sensation I’d felt for a couple of days.
It wasn’t helping. Since I’d claimed Maddy, it had been as though I was going to rip right out of my skin.
All I could do was try to keep it together so no one else noticed or worried about me.
My attempts to do that had been fairly successful but not perfect.
Luis sat on the other side of the table. “What the hell’s going on?”
I glanced up and saw Luis looking at me, one eyebrow raised in question.
His eyes were glued to my hand, massaging my other arm.
If there was anyone I’d never be able to fool, it was Luis.
He was a professional investigator, for God’s sake.
He was too damned observant for his own good.
I pulled my hand away so quickly that it probably looked like I’d been burned.
I shook my head. “Nothing’s wrong. Why?”
Luis crossed his arms and tilted his head. “You say that, but your body language says different. Spill it.”
We stared at each other for several long moments. I was hoping he’d get the message and drop it, but he was obviously not going to. My irritation slowly gave way to acceptance, even though it pissed me off to no end that he’d beaten me.
“Fine,” I hissed. “It's this new power I’ve got.”
“New power?”
“Yeah. Ever since I claimed Maddy. It’s like…
I don’t know. Imagine how strong you are now, then take all that power and strength and plunge it right into the body of a thirteen-year-old kid or something.
That’s what it’s like—almost too much to handle.
Good lord, I can almost feel it seeping out of my pores. ”
Luis nodded. “I can go ahead and confirm that’s true.
Even sitting this close, I can feel it coming off you.
It gives me these weird instinctual feelings.
Sort of like I want to get on my knees and swear fealty to you like you’re some ancient king or something.
The others also feel it. It’s weird. I’ll admit that.
Sort of difficult to be around, honestly. ”
I lowered my head into my hands. “I’m sorry. I can’t control it yet.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Luis waved me off. “It’s not a bad thing. We aren’t scared of you or anything. Besides, I think it’ll get better once you learn to harness this new power. You know, control it. It’s new. Just like what Maddy’s going through.”
“Right, but shouldn’t I be dealing with this better?
I was born a shifter. Changes should come easier to me,” I said.
Maybe he didn’t understand what I meant, but it made sense in my head.
I was the one who’d been changing since I was eleven years old.
I was well-equipped to handle this, but I still felt like my skin was about to explode from my body.
“Correct,” Luis said. “But the issue is the power you’re sharing. We know Maddy’s lineage. That’s some powerful shit. We know you aren’t trying to force us all into submission or anything. We’re here, bro. You’ll be fine in a few days. I’d almost guarantee it.”
“I can only hope some of your positivity rubs off on me.” I shook my head and sighed. “You know, I really thought claiming Maddy would be all about me helping her through the changes. I didn’t think I’d have to worry about myself.”
Luis left a while later, and I was stewing in my own thoughts.
Maddy was grocery shopping with Felipe, and the house felt simultaneously too big and too small.
If I could describe how I felt, it was probably closer to going through puberty than anything else.
It ticked all the boxes: strange emotions, weird things happening to my body, new strength.
I took a little while to sit on my bed and do some breathing exercises.
Perhaps meditation would help me focus on my new power.
I listened to music and took slow, deep breaths, letting the new sensations wash over me.
At first, I felt weird, like some new-age guru trying to “find his center”, but after a few minutes, I really thought it was helping.
Luis was probably right—it would probably take a few days to really get a handle on it.
There was just so much power. It was a testament to Maddy’s family tree.
Being fated mates likely increased the power even more.
I couldn’t even imagine what was going on inside Maddy’s body.
In the afternoon, Javi and his packmates showed up.
Although the meeting was scheduled, it didn’t alleviate the tension.
There were lots of glares and whispered words from my pack as Javi and his crew pulled in.
The cars came in a big convoy, almost like a parade, and parked at the edge of the forest at the far end of the Lorenzo property.
We were using a large open field, which was usually only used for flag football games on Thanksgiving.
It was the best place for the training I had in mind.
My pack stood in a clump behind me, and everyone looked nervous about our long-time rivals being so far into our lands.
Dad, Maddy, and my brothers stood with me.
Luis, Felipe, and Sebastian were in a small semi-circle between my family and the rest of the pack.
Javi got out of his muscle car and gave me a nod, which I returned.
His crew piled out of their cars and slowly approached us.
Several members of my pack growled behind, and I heard my three friends quieting the dissent.
I was thankful for them because the last thing I needed was to appear weak and unable to control my own people.
“Hey, Nico. How goes it?” Javi said as he got within a few yards of me.
“It goes fine. How are you and yours?”
Javi sighed and kicked a clump of dirt to the side.
“Pretty sure the royals are shopping out my neighborhood. Nothing concrete, but there’ve been some sightings.
This little”—he gestured around at all of us and his pack—“get-together seems like a really good idea. The longer this goes on, the more danger we’re all in. ”
I nodded and raised my hands, turning so everyone in both packs saw me.
The murmurs of conversation faded, and I tried to project my voice so everyone could hear me.
“The two packs that have come together here have been rivals for as long as I can remember.
As of today, we are one team brought together by a mutual enemy.
An enemy who wishes us harm. An enemy who would kill each and every one of us, our friends, and our families, to further their gains.
On this day, we stand and begin a partnership that will benefit and protect both packs.
Tonight, we learn to fight together. This is the day we spit into the eye of the royals.
“It won’t be easy, but I know we will make this work. For the next month, we are allies. I expect every member of my pack to abide by my word. If anyone has a problem with that, they are free to leave right now. Otherwise, we learn to fight alongside each other, not with each other. Are we good?”
A resounding bellow of agreement erupted from my pack. I turned and stared at Javi. He nodded and glanced back at his people, asking a silent question with a simple raise of an eyebrow. His pack all nodded in agreement. He looked back at me and shrugged. “We’re good if you’re good.”
“Okay,” I said. “We shift, then we separate into groups, a mixture of your people and mine working together. I’d like the first session to have our strongest people acting as the royals.
That will show us what we’re truly working with when it comes to our younger and more inexperienced people.
We can organize once we’ve shifted. Good? ”
Javi nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”
“Maddy, head off to the side. I don’t want you getting trampled by a hundred wolves.” She nodded grudgingly and trudged away from the two main groups.
There was a ripple of movement as dozens of men and women started shifting. I realized in the instant before I shifted that I hadn’t done this since Maddy and I mated. I had about a half second to think about what changes might be in store for me as I morphed into a wolf.
Almost instantly, I felt a well of power brimming within me and cascading out of my body.
It felt like a physical wire connected Maddy and me.
I looked around, surprised at the reaction the others were showing.
Every shifter had bowed down, kneeling on their front paws, heads lowered, several of them whining in submission.
Most surprising was the fact that all of Javi’s pack, including Javi himself, were doing the same.
They looked uncomfortable and twitchy, but it was like they couldn’t help falling prostrate in front of me.
The feeling was overwhelming. The power I had over my friends, family, and allies was more than I could handle. The aura emanating from me was like a weapon, and I was too scared to use it. I shifted back as quickly as I could.
Panting for breath, I held up my hands in surrender. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” I shouted, hoping everyone could hear me as they started to raise their heads.
Dad shifted back to human and hurried over to me.
“It’s all right, Nico, don’t apologize. This is what being an alpha is.
A true alpha, with your mate beside you.
This is the power you are meant to have.
You will be the strongest alpha in hundreds of years.
Harness this power, trust it, and use it to lead us.
Lead, Nico. It’s what you were born for.
” Dad gave me a broad smile that emanated his pride.
I glanced over at Maddy and, for the first time, I felt her power emanating from her.
As she watched us, I could tell she didn’t even realize she was doing it.
Her aura was pushing out dominating energy almost equal to mine.
It reminded me that she was also an alpha.
Two alphas as mates? What would that do for the pack?
I’d never heard of that occurring. After a moment’s thought, I decided it could only make us stronger.
I grinned at her, and she gave me a hesitant smile.
I shifted back to my wolf form and did my best to reel in the power.
It seemed to work. Everyone acted like they weren’t as intimidated by me.
I went to Javi and nudged him. The two of us organized the packs into two groups, and then we went through a dozen different scenarios.
It was exhausting and difficult, but nothing degenerated between the two packs.
I was pleasantly surprised at how both groups worked together.
By the end of the first night, my sliver of hope had blossomed into something a little more substantial.
When we were done, Javi and I stood, slicked with sweat and panting for breath. I put out my hand to him. “Thanks for coming out. Let’s shoot for another session tomorrow?”
Javi stared at my hand for several seconds before reaching forward and taking it. He looked into my eyes. “Nico, thanks for trusting me. Me and my pack. I know I haven’t done much to warrant your faith, so this means a lot.”
I shook his hand. “Stay the course, and do right by us. If you can do that, then we will do right by you.”
Javi inclined his head and grinned. “Fair enough.”
That evening, Maddy and I didn’t get home until well after the sun set. She’d been quiet since the session with Javi’s pack started. It was obvious that she was thinking about something, but I wasn’t going to pry. I went about making a quick dinner for us, letting her work it out in her head.
I was unwrapping a frozen pizza when she spoke. “I could feel everyone’s energy.”
“What?”
“It was like I could read the energy of everyone there.” She looked at me. “You’re so strong.”
“Much stronger now since we’ve mated,” I said, nodding.
Maddy gave me a look that told me she knew I was being deliberately obtuse. “No, Nico. I mean you’re really strong. Plus, I could tell you were holding back out there. You… I think you’d have beaten any shifter out there if they’d attacked you. Even if they worked together.”
Hearing her say that filled me with a bit of childish pride.
Maddy had seen how strong I was, and it had impressed her.
I shrugged and slid the pizza into the oven.
“I held back, yeah. I didn’t want to hurt anyone.
I’m still getting used to this new energy I’ve got—sort of like you are. You aren’t worried about me, are you?”
Maddy studied me, worry creasing her forehead.
“I worry about what that power can do to someone. Something like that can go to your head. Remember what all that power did to Edemas? I’m scared that the same thing could happen to either of us.
It’s so new and intense. What if it changes us before we really understand it? ”
I circled the kitchen island and wrapped my arms around her in a tight embrace.
She threw her arms around me and pulled me just as close.
I put my lips to her ear. “We are not Edemas—no matter what. Plus, we have each other. Neither of us will let the other turn into some soulless, power-hungry monster.”
Maddy pressed her hands into my back and tried to pull me even closer.
I could sense the terror vibrating within her body.
She was terrified that we’d lose ourselves to this newfound strength.
If either of us succumbed to the power, it would be the downfall of the entire pack.
I wondered if, maybe, she was right to worry.
