Maddox #2
Her eyes go wide, “You wouldn’t!” she shrieks, twisting the hem of her shirt in her hand.
“I sure as fuck would! Now talk…”
Melody
“Fine, but you can’t tell Kai. Dax is handlin’ it, but….about them just gettin’ back together? Yeahhhh, that’s not gonna just happen. So..they’re gonna need help,” I mutter, feeling the shame written across my face.
Dani pinches the bridge of her nose, “What did you do?”
Taking a deep breath, I look around, making sure we’re still alone.
“You can’t breathe a word of this. I withheld nine months of letters to Dax from Kai.
Kai thinks that Dax was ignoring him, then, they had a big fight on the phone right before Kai started doin’ all the weird stuff,” I say in almost one breath.
Dani looks at me in disbelief and then in a screech she begins, “You did WHAT? Why? OH MY GOD! What the fuck, Mel?” she trails off rubbing her forehead, “You know we have to fix this, right?”
With an exaggerated head nod, and a ‘duh’ look on my face, “Why the fuck do you think we’re here so fuckin’ early? And shhh. Look, I have a plan. Now listen,” I say.
Dani shakes her head, lighting us another cigarette, “This better be epic or it’ll never work. They’re two of the most stubborn fuckers I’ve ever met…and I’m dating Jason,” she tells me, rolling her eyes and blowing smoke into the air around us.
I roll my eyes at that, “That’s a topic for another day. I told you to go after Seb, I’m never goin’ back to him.”
Dani waves her hand at me, “We’re not talkin’ about this right now. Don’t change the subject. Fuck, girl. How. Are. We. Fixing. This?”
I hold my hands up in surrender, “Okay, so last night Dax and I talked a lot and I suggested he come by today for a peek at Kai in his uniform.”
“Okay, I see what you’re doing there. Has he seen pics of the glow up?” Dani asks, trying to figure out how much Dax actually knows about the new Kai.
I do a little dance, “Nope, he doesn’t know about…”
Dani jumps in, “The growth spurt?”
I shrug my shoulders with a squeal, “Nope!” I say, popping the ‘p’. “He doesn’t know any of it. Not the muscles, not the height, none of it.”
Dani sits on the table top, letting it all sink in. “Okay, okay, I got it. We just need ‘em to see each other. If Dax was in with the awkward look Kai had, he’s gonna go nuts over Kai 2.0.”
I throw my arm up in the air in triumph, “I knew you were the perfect accomplice. Yup, that’s it. I suggested he come by for ‘closure’,” rolling my eyes before I continue, “knowing that if he sees that Kai, it’ll be a wrap on him walkin’ away.”
Dani chews on her nail, “Um, gettin’ them to see each other is one thing, but, ya do know they’re gonna have to talk to get back together, right?” she says nervously.
Slumping my shoulders, “No shit, they need to talk. That’s the next part of the plan. Timmy.”
Daniella
“Timmy? Yeah, cause usin’ that asswipe as bait for your brother who just came out of juvie is gonna go over well,” I say, rolling my eyes, throwing the now empty cigarette pack at her. “And closure? Really? That’s the best you could come up with for a reason for them to talk?”
Mel catches the pack and throws it back at me, “I just have to make sure Timmy approaches Kai where Dax can see.” I explain. “Why does everyone cringe at closure? Some of us need it, damnit!”
I snort, “You mean they need to fuck each other outta their system?”
Mel glares at me this time, “Hey, it was one time in a moment of weakness after we broke up. Focus! We’re runnin’ outta time.”
Looking up at the sky for a moment, I sigh and look back at Mel, “Okay, it’s worth a shot. We get ‘em both riled up and suggest….what?”
Mel waved her hand at me, “I got that part covered. I’ll take care of that tonight, at home. Just help me make sure Dax sees Timmy and Kai together and the rest will fall into place.”
We both knew that the two idiots would be together for a long time if they could just get out of their own way and start talking TO each other instead of AT each other.
I shrug as I see Kai approaching, “You better hope so,” I say, “but, time to change the subject. Here comes idiot number one.”
Kai
Approaching the school, I notice Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum leaned close to each other, talking in hushed tones amongst themselves.
‘What are they up to, now?’ I wonder as I approach them. They stop talking as I get closer. ‘Well, that wasn’t suspicious at all.’
“Okay, what's up? You two barely make the first bell on a good day. And you never get here this early,” I point out as I take Mel's coffee from her. Taking a sip, I notice it’s gone cold. ‘So they’ve been here awhile,’ I think, raising my eyebrows at them, suspicion radiating from my eyes.
Dani hands me a cigarette, “Maybe we wanna turn over a new leaf?” She points out.
Squinting at her, “Two months before graduation?” I ask.
Mel grabs my arm, “Stop bein’ paranoid, it’s nothin’, just needed some girl talk. We’ll be back to your regularly scheduled programming tomorrow.”
I eye them, tonguing at the corner of my mouth, ‘I know they’re up to something, but I don’t have time to argue this. I can’t be late for uniform inspection.’
Shaking my head, “Whatever you say. Gotta run,” I say, pulling them into a quick hug, kissing the top of Mel’s head before turning to leave. “See ya later,” I call out over my shoulder.
I hear them giggling as I break into a jog heading for the ROTC classroom.
