Chapter 24
CHAPTER 24
MACKENZIE
I never imagined being a mother then and I sure as hell am not one now, but that doesn’t mean I don’t need to know where my daughter is. She belongs with her family, good people who are nothing like Creed or me.
Larken fills me in on the latest developments in our search for her, and I can't believe how little progress we’ve made. “We’ve checked security footage and phone records, but there’s no trace of the Hernandez family after they left on an unexpected vacation to an unknown destination.”
“You know that’s bullshit. They haven’t used their credit cards.” Jenson says.
“Yeah. We know that. Creed seems to have them tucked away and I’m telling you that the best way to get your daughter is to bring that motherfucker in and force him to tell us where she is.”
I shake my head. “I don’t want him to do something reckless, like hurt the Hernandez’s.”
“Then maybe you shouldn’t have gone off the rails and torched his business,” Jenson says, shaking his head.
Jenson's words remind me that this entire mess is my fault - if I hadn't lost control, maybe, none of this would have happened.
My phone buzzes and I look down at the message from an unknown number.“It’s Creed. He wants to meet tomorrow,” I say.
“Like hell you are! You aren’t meeting that guy alone, Mackenzie,” Larken says, his voice firm.
“It’s the only way we’re going to get answers about Gabriella.” I stand and put my leather jacket on. “He wants to talk, so I’ll talk.”
“Fine, but you are not going alone. We’ll be there waiting nearby and if things go south.”
“All right,” I say. I know they don’t like it, but they know better than to try and stop me.
