13. Javi #2
Grunting, he slowly types in the name before hesitating.
Turning toward me, he says flatly, “Wait. I remember I had to go out and deal with idiot bloodsuckers over this one. She’s got two lawyers fighting to protect her.
One is a known associate of the Amato Family.
The other is Bratva. That’s not good company to keep. ”
“If that’s the case, both you and I are guilty.
How many people did I interact with at the prison who were part of gangs and other Organizations?
She’s a doctor. She does her job, which means she treats the person without asking whether they’re good or not.
She cannot pass judgment. You know better. Plus, you know a surgeon’s ego…”
He laughs again, and I try not to wince at the loudness. “True. As bad as the bloodsucking lawyers are, at least they don’t think they’re God like surgeons.”
“And Sarah is the type who will challenge the heavens—or the devil himself—for someone. If they’re on her table, even if she’s not the one doing the surgery, you can bet they will have the best care possible.
Hell, she flew in some big-shot doctor to do heart surgery on a kid whose father couldn’t afford the care on his own.
That’s who she is, which is why I think there’s been a mistake. ”
My phone vibrates and I almost shudder with relief.
Fucking hell, I didn’t think Leandro was going to make it.
Not that I’ll ever tell him that I doubted him, but there’s only so much distracting I can do.
Davids, despite being an officer, is actually a solid guy, and doesn’t easily get thrown off the scent of a story.
With a scowl, the Captain turns back to his computer.
And I see the moment he must realize there’s a problem.
His jaw drops, and he’s out of his chair so fast I’m surprised he doesn't leave smoke in his wake. I’m curious what’s happening, but I know not to leave the confines of the office.
Still, I keep an eye on him as he knocks firmly on the door of one of the interview rooms. Whoever opens it is summarily pulled out, and whatever Davids is saying is punctuated with finger jabs that are definitely going to leave a bruise.
The man halts his Captain and ducks back inside, bringing out a piece of paper.
The Captain scowls at it before pulling the man over to an unoccupied computer and gesturing for him to use it.
Given the way the Captain crosses his arms, I think I’ve inflicted maximum chaos here.
Especially when, no matter what the officer does, nothing will come up proving that’s a valid arrest warrant. Beautiful.
I turn my attention away, not wanting to get caught watching. It’s a long ten minutes before the Captain returns, his face practically set in stone. He doesn’t go to his desk chair, though. Instead, he leans against the desk right in front of me and glares down at me.
“I’m betting you have a guess as to what happened. I want to hear it.”
I open my hands innocently and shrug. “I really don’t.
I only know Dr. Ranlen to be an extremely ethical doctor, and when I heard, I came immediately, since it’s your precinct.
You’ve done so much to get rid of corruption that I knew someone had to be targeting her, and I didn’t want you to be thrown to the wolves over it. ”
He studies me carefully, but eventually gives up with a muted growl. “Fine. She’s being brought here.”
Eventually there’s a knock at the door, and when I turn, there’s Dr. Ranlen and two different lawyers arguing behind her. Straightening, Captain Davids goes straight to Sarah with his hand outstretched. “I want to personally apologize and let you know I will be investigating what happened.”
Sarah only briefly meets my eyes before turning her charm on the Captain as she shakes his hand. “It’s not a problem. I understand there was a paperwork issue. I know from all my time in bureaucracy that these things happen. I’m very sorry you had to get involved.”
With a tight smile, he drops his grip and steps back. “That’s my job. Someone has to make sure everything runs smoothly around here. Thankfully, Javi alerted me that there was an issue. But please, if you have any further issues, reach out to my office directly.”
“I will. And thank you for taking care of everything. Please know I appreciate all you and your officers do to keep us safe.”
Captain Davids relaxes enough to give her a genuine grin and a polite nod. I take that as my cue to leave as well, exchanging pleasantries with the Captain myself. The rest of the tableau doesn’t bother.
Still, none of us say a word as we exit the building. It’s only when we get closer to the SUV that Sarah breaks her silence. “I didn’t need you to come to the rescue, but thank you.”
“Does that mean I can actually use your name now?” I ask hopefully.
Her venomous look steals the hope away, but then she whirls on the two lawyers.
She crosses her arms, tapping her feet. “And you two. I don’t know what the plan was in there, but if I’m ever in a situation where I need a lawyer, I don’t want either of you.
Both of you acted immaturely, fighting over me like I’m a piece of meat.
Disgusting behavior. And I will make sure to bring this up with both the Council and David.
You’re lucky this was fixed, because if it was left up to the two of you, I probably would have had even more charges put on me. ”
“Oooh, that’s gonna hurt. I think we should get you back to the mansion. Before you try to take on two lawyers.”
With a sneer, one steps forward. “If you would have listened to me, you would have been out already. It’s not my fault this asshole came in trying to act like he had a bigger dick than mine. He probably can’t even find it.”
The other man doesn’t say a word. He merely reaches into his jacket, takes out a business card, and extends it to Sarah. She hesitates, but eventually takes it. With a slightly accented voice, he says, “Call David,” before turning around and marching away.
The bodyguard that was waiting in the lobby joins us at that point, and merely opens the door for us to get in. Groaning at the behavior, I gesture for Sarah to get in first. As soon as she’s in, I turn to the other lawyer and hesitate.
“Sinclair, right?” He doesn’t say a word, but I take that as an affirmative.
“Alright, I guess I’ll call you kitten then.
Just to let you know? I guarantee you my dick is bigger than yours, and if you decide to be unprofessional again in front of our allies, I’ll make sure the Council is aware of it. ”
With that, I slide in next to Sarah and wait for the guard to close the door.
Before he does, I catch the flare of interest on the lawyer’s face, but it’s the type of interest that I have a feeling is more dangerous than mere attraction.
No, that’s curiosity, and fuck if I need someone sniffing around…
Pushing the kitten out of my mind, I focus instead on Sarah, but when she closes her eyes, I decide to let her rest. We’ll be back at the mansion soon enough, and hopefully, there will be news.
At least, I’m not faced with having to call an heir to the Bratva.
No wonder Sarah wants to zone out… I, on the other hand, have to prepare for updating the damn Council, because I’m sure that’ll fall on me too.
