Chapter 6
Chapter Six
Kayne
Someone pounding on the door ripped me from my dream about a future with both Blythe and Fritz. I slid out of the bed, then stomped over to the door, throwing it open with the best glower my sleepy state could muster. "What do you want?"
Siphon stood with his arms crossed. His gaze dropped to my crotch, then he met my eyes with a raised eyebrow. "Did you forget something?"
"Dammit." I'd passed out without committing to having my pants either on or off. After taking a second to tuck myself away and fasten them, I glared at the Triton.
"Why are you banging on my door so early?"
Siphon narrowed his eyes on me. "Fritz's delivery has arrived. It's loud, annoying, and disrupting the peace. He needs to come get it." The Triton turned and walked off without another word.
"I don't know what that means." He didn't acknowledge me calling after them.
I heard someone on the bed move. "Second half of my surprise has arrived. When Blythe is awake and ready, we'll take her to it." Fritz's voice spoke from a low tone across the room.
"I'll be ready after I take a shower." Blythe's sweet voice met my ears.
With the door closed, I went over to the edge of the bed and kissed her. "Anything for you mate. Just say the words, and I'll make the whole world stop."
She kissed Fritz, kissed me, and kissed Fritz again to make us even. "I'm the luckiest woman in the world." Blythe paused for a moment before she brushed her lips against both of our foreheads, then ran off to the shower.
Fritz still laid on the bed. I joined him, lying on my side as I faced him.
"I have to admit, last night was pretty hot.
Despite everything we were taught and what we know, I really hope she's right.
Last night, I had this dream that everything worked out.
We got to go home and live our lives together.
It was more than I could ever hope for." I watched his facial reactions, looking for any sign of how he felt, but he'd shut down again.
He didn't believe we had a chance. I couldn't blame him.
He'd be the one who ended up alone if this didn't go as we hoped.
My gaze wandered over him, taking in his sleepy, disheveled appearance.
I loved it when he looked like this, except for the slight frown between his eyebrows.
If only he felt the same way I did, but he didn't. What we had now would be enough, as long as he was happy.
It would break my heart to see him left out if everything went wrong.
I reached out to touch him, console his worry, but I couldn't bring myself to do it.
Instead, I let my hand fall back on the bed, and we laid there in silence as Blythe showered.
When she was finished, she dressed in her clothes from yesterday, opting to go commando.
I'd made a mental note to have clothes delivered for all of us.
"Now that we're ready, let's go see what my friends found." Fritz stalked out of the room and through the halls of Atlantis.
Blythe and I followed him. She gestured to him with a questioning facial expression.
I shrugged my shoulders and sent my calming emotions through our fresh mate bond.
Her eyes widened slightly, then she smiled as she did the same.
We came to a small bay at the edge of the island.
A man sat with his back against a tall, ornately carved pole.
A large metal shackle was fastened around his neck.
The moment he saw us, he jumped and charged over. The chain ran out of length, and he almost toppled over. He sputtered and coughed for a moment, then his furious gaze landed on Blythe. "What am I doing here, wife?"
*.*.*.*.*
Fritz
Blythe's face paled as she stepped behind Kayne. "What's he doing here?"
"At first, I thought the divorce would be enough to free you from this despicable creature, but then my private investigator discovered something.
" I glared at the human. "You're not his first child bride.
His first victim died the year before he married you.
According to the M.E.'s report, she died from blunt force trauma.
The excuse given when the paramedics arrived was she'd fallen down the stairs.
But that's not what really happened, is it Tony?
" I crossed my arms as I glared at him. Siphon walked up to us, his arms crossed as he stood silently.
Blythe poked her head out from behind Kayne. "I didn't know he'd been married before me."
"She didn't know how to behave. I warned her what would happen if she didn't do as she should. Same as I told you, Blythe." Despite being shackled to a pole, he managed to look smug. "What will it take for you to release me? Name your price."
Kayne clenched his jaw as he glared at the human. "We don't want your money."
"What then?"
Blythe stared at him for a long time, before her gaze drifted to me. "I never wanted to see him again. Why would you bring him here?"
"Because he hurt you. He might have touched you, but he would have. His type always hurts people. So I thought you might want some kind of closure."
She shook her head. "I don't want to be responsible for his death, but I don't want to ever see him again."
"Bitch, you'll never be rid of me. There's no place you can hide that I won't find you. I'll drag you back, and then you'll see what it's like to be chained up."
Kayne charged forward. "I've heard enough. Get him out of here or I'll kill him myself."
"We're not letting him go. You heard him." I shot back at Kayne. "He'll never leave her alone."
Kayne remembered Blythe had been hiding behind him and returned to her side.
"And we're not going to traumatize her by doing anything in front of her.
Now get him out of here." He bit out. Then he turned to her and murmured near her ear.
With my shifter hearing, I heard every word.
"Don't worry mate, you'll never have to deal with him again. "
The human started shouting at Kayne when he neared Blythe. "Get away from her, she's my wife!"
Something appeared to snap in her because the terrified demeanor disappeared as she took a step toward the human.
"Not anymore. You've been served, you… assface!
" Kayne smiled as he watched Blythe unleash her fury on the human's ears.
A bubble of pride filled my chest at her rant which continued for a few more minutes.
Once her energy ran low, she leaned against Kayne. I went to her side and kissed her on the forehead. It was then I noticed tears rolling down her cheeks. "I'm proud of you."
She ran a hand through her hair, trying to tame it back. "You were right, I feel a lot better having said all that to his face. Now I'm exhausted and just want to curl up in bed with you both."
I wiped away her tears. "Whatever you want, right after we figure out what to do with him."
"He could fall off the planet for all I care." Blythe clung to Kayne.
The human shouted from behind me. I turned, and watched as Siphon shoved the human on a platform I hadn't noticed.
He removed the shackle around the human's neck, then stomped on some kind of a button.
Siphon put his hands up to his mouth as he made a high pitched animal call.
The platform sent the human flying over the bay.
He screamed as he flew through the air, then hit the water hard.
A few seconds later, a great white shark breached the water, snapping up the human in his deadly jaws, before splashing underwater.
Kayne and I had learned a lot about the Tritons over the years, but that was a first. Blythe appeared to be equally speechless, because she stood with her mouth slightly agape.
Siphon walked past nonchalantly, like he hadn't just used a shark to execute someone. "What? You were taking too long."
I glanced at Kayne over Blythe's head. "Remind me to never piss him off."
"Come on, let's go back to our room." Blythe tugged at my shirt.
Kayne scooped her up and carried her. A weight sank in my gut. Today was a new day, which meant we'd find out for sure if Blythe was right about both of us being her mates.
