Chapter Four

*Him*

His mind reeled while she paced. He'd never wanted to get close to a female as much as her. His attraction to this mortal was like a drug, and even with her standing only feet away, he itched to jump up and grab her back into his arms. The water elemental he’d thought to bond with was nothing more than a shadow compared to the emotions swelling in his heart for this woman.

He’d never felt a pull as strong as this; he didn’t know it was possible.

The water spirit had been his downfall, leaving him and running off with a fire fae.

He retreated from his world with a broken heart after, the trees his only companions for over a century.

He never thought he'd even want to look at another female until he became enchanted by a small human girl singing songs of the fairies while helping a wounded chipmunk gather nuts for the winter. She touched something deep inside him he’d long since given up as dead.

She nursed his heart back to life with each seed and berry she collected.

It was an innocent interest, speaking to the child he once was.

Now, experiencing the sheer force of his attraction to this human girl—no, woman—had him reassessing everything.

His magic swelled and whispered about another love, a stronger love that would transform the pain of his past heartache into a mere memory.

It promised something more. Something he'd been waiting for without knowing.

She is for you.

He never before ignored the call of his power, and it was practically screaming at him.

She is your destiny.

He rose from the bed, heart open and spirits soaring with aching hope.

The promise his magic made had him releasing his shell, and life anew sparked in his azure eyes.

Her rambling, one-sided conversation was adorable.

He approached her, purposely shuffling his feet so as not to surprise her, but she was so engrossed, he was certain even a volcanic eruption wouldn’t have gained her attention.

“I'm not some hussy who jumps into bed with the first handsome man who shows up…”
