Chapter 39 #2
She sat and he took the seat beside her. A waiter brought him a glass of whiskey. He took a sip, and she had to fight back the urge to tell him to get on with it. He was teasing them, and the end of the world was not a matter for teasing. Rose was not so patient.
“Come on, Kane, spit it out.”
He smiled but put down his glass. “Okay, so we don’t have all the details yet, Ethan is getting them, but the Keck telescopes at Mauna Kea in Hawaii have picked up an asteroid, and it’s heading this way. It’s estimated to be here on February the 28th.”
She sat silent while she processed that information. There was no way it could be a coincidence. But what did it mean?
“Is it going to hit?”
“On the current trajectory, it looks like it’s going to miss us by about a mile. But there are other factors that might come into play and change things.”
Rose frowned. “I suppose that’s good news in a way. On the other hand, if Earth is about to get hit by a fucking great asteroid, then that’s a disaster. And I’m not sure how we’re supposed to stop it.”
“Maybe that’s what the bomb was for,” Kaitlin said. “To somehow destroy the asteroid and prevent the cataclysm. Could that have been the Tel Group’s job?”
“Maybe,” Kane replied. “And that’s why they took the machine. That was the mission all along. To blow up the asteroid before it hits Earth. To save the world.”
“So, we don’t have to do anything. Stella and her friends will save the world for us.” Kaitlin frowned. “It just seems…too easy.”
Kane gave a shrug. “I saw the control panel; they were definitely heading to the 28th of February.”
He was right, but she just couldn’t shake the idea that they were missing something. “If the asteroid is currently on a trajectory to miss the Earth, then maybe the plan is to explode the bomb and divert the asteroid, so that it does hit us.”
“Possibly. But at least now we know how the world might end,” Kane continued. “And we can monitor the asteroid’s path, so soon we’ll have a location.”
She brightened. Now she knew what he was getting at. “So we can go there and be in place when the time machine turns up. We can see what they’re up to and stop them if they’re up to no good.”
“Hell, yes. But that’s for tomorrow. Or rather next week.” He downed the rest of his whiskey, then got to his feet and held out his hand. “Right now, we need to find that room.”
He was so right. She slid her palm into his and he pulled her up. “Night, Rose.”
“Goodnight.”
Everything had changed.
Kaitlin was trying to wrap her head around it all.
Kane was here and he was back. And he loved her—not that she’d ever doubted that—but he loved her, and he didn’t hate himself.
And they were going to save the world.
Or maybe not. But they were going to try. And now, they had something concrete to work with.
Kane walked fast, almost pulling her along. He stopped at the elevators and pressed the button, then turned to look down at her.
“I’m sorry I stayed away, that I wasted what little time we might have left. But I needed to be alone for a while, to come to terms with what happened. To Leila and Brandon. To the whole goddamned mission.”
“And have you?”
“I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t. I fucked up. But it happens. We’re essentially human, after all.”
Weird. Hadn’t she been thinking the same thing? “I’m just glad you’re here.”
The doors slid open. He stepped inside and she followed. “What floor?”
“Twenty-four.”
He stabbed his finger on the button, and as the doors slid shut, he reached for her and dragged her into his arms, pressing her up against the wall and taking her mouth in an almost savage kiss.
He’d been holding back before, but now he released his control, and heat and passion raged between them.
His big hard body pressed up against her, and she could feel him along the whole length of her.
He was already hard, and she thrust her hips against the rigid length of his erection, until he moaned into the kiss.
The elevator dinged and the door slid open. But still, he kissed her.
Someone cleared their throat, and she opened her eyes to see a young couple standing outside, watching them, eyes wide.
She grinned. “Sorry.” Then she grabbed Kane’s hand and dragged him into the corridor.
Her hand fumbled as she tried to get the card into the lock, but finally they were in her room, and he slammed the door closed behind them.
He stripped off his coat and dropped it to the floor, then ripped off his shirt, sending buttons flying.
She ran her palms over the sleek skin of his chest—it was burning hot—and slipped her hands into the waistband of his jeans, pulling him closer.
He was kissing her again, his hands moving over her body, unfastening her clothes.
Without breaking the kiss, she managed to kick off her boots, then she was wriggling out of her leather pants while he tugged her sweater over her head, leaving her in a black bra and panties.
A second later she was naked, and he went still for just a moment, staring at her, his eyes filled with heat.
Holding her gaze, he unfastened his jeans, lowering the zipper slowly.
Her gaze dropped. He was huge, and her mouth watered.
Then his hands slid around to cup her ass and he lifted her.
Wrapping her legs around his waist, she let her head go back, and he buried his face against her breasts.
He slammed her up against the door and filled her in one hard lunge of his body.
And she stopped thinking. Instead, she just gave herself up to the feelings.
For a second he was still, his big body tense, then he moved, pulling out slowly, and her eyes closed as she concentrated on the pleasure singing along her nerves.
He pushed back in, grinding against her and the pleasure coalesced, concentrating in that one spot between her thighs.
Then he was moving fast, thrusting into her, and out, his hips pumping as though he had no control.
He raised his head and stared into her eyes, and she became aware of the room around her, the smooth wood against her back. “You make me lose control.” He thrust again. “I like it. I like being out of control.”
“I like it, too.” She bucked her hips against him, and his eyes darkened. He tightened his grip on her ass, his fingers digging into her soft flesh. “Hold on.”
Then he was moving again, and she released the last of her own control and moved to a place where only the two of them existed, and the pleasure building inside her was all that mattered.
She knew he was close as well, and she rubbed up against him, never wanting him to stop, but needing the pressure to break.
At last, when she thought she would implode from the feelings, the tension shattered, and pleasure washed over her, saturating her, as she exploded into a thousand tiny pieces and stars glittered behind her eyes.
Kane came a moment later, his head back, hands still holding her tightly as he continued to thrust as though he couldn’t bear to stop.
Finally, he went still, his grip loosened, and she slid down his body. His arms wrapped around her, and he held her close. “I love you.”
