“Why won’t you tell me what happened to my mother?” Emma asked, aware she was risking the big man’s hot temper. But it sounded as if he had been the last person to see her mother alive.
“It’s none of your business.”
That makes no sense.
“She’s my mother. Just tell me where she’s buried.” Tears started to burn.
Confusion crossed his face. “She’s not dead,” he stated slowly, as if she were dumb.
“Yes, she is! She’s dead!” cried Emma.
Otherwise she would have come back for me.
He shook his head. “No, she’s not. I’ve seen her.”
Emma caught her breath as she studied his face, her vision tunneling.
He’s telling the truth.
She abandoned me.
She never wanted me.
