Vameer

The front door slams closed, snapping me out of my stunned stillness.

I cannot believe my gravito just betrayed me.

There’s a pinch at the base of my neck.

I ignore it.

I don’t have time to fucking argue with myself.

It’s nearing four in the morning, and my mate just ran outside.

“You better behave,” I whisper to my power as I step off the edge of the roof.

I drop between buildings, the narrow space just wide enough for my shoulders.

My gravito flares, and I land silently.

There’s another pinch on my neck, as if to say, See? And I swear to the gods, if this is a new thing, I’m going to lose it.

Carefully, I move forward and peek around the corner.

My mate’s house is in the middle of the block. A few lights are on over doors, but the only streetlights are at the intersections, so this stretch of sidewalk is mostly in shadow.

But that doesn’t matter, because my mate is lit up like a beacon.

Her skin is practically glowing. Her long red curls are lifting around her on the breeze. And… she’s hot.

I push up my left sleeve and watch matching steam rise off my forearm.

When my eyes shift back to my mate, I smile.

Because she might still look human, but the mate bond is affecting her. Making her more like me.

Making her invincible.

Another damned pinch on my neck. But I don’t let it dim my smile.

My gravito can gloat about being right later. I’ll happily accept that my plan to leave was wrong. Because that means I get to claim my mate. Without guilt. Right now.

I take one step out from between the houses just as voices echo down the street from the end of the block.

Male voices.

My mate takes her own step forward. Toward the voices.

I narrow my eyes.

Oh no you don’t, Little Human.
