Chapter 42
Ihate that we have to let her go with Jake, but I know it’s necessary.
We must let Randall believe he’s in control, or we risk revealing our hand too soon. That doesn’t make it any easier, though, not for me or any of the guys.
Jade left with him about ten minutes ago, according to Rick, and they are heading out now, too.
I won't be far behind them, and while I wish I were going to be there sooner, I know I need to check in with Dom and Tobias, who will watch Charlotte tonight. Charlotte's safety is one of Jade’s top concerns, and if we want her to be at her best, we need everything to go as smoothly as possible. Not to mention, none of us would ever forgive ourselves if something happened to her. She doesn’t deserve this the same way Jade didn’t.
None of them do.
“Dom!” I call out the moment I make it through the back door of Hopper’s. I don’t have time for small talk, but I know he’ll understand.
He’s already headed down the stairs with Tobias a few steps behind him, and I give them both a nod.
I can always count on Dom.
“Hey boss, we’re good to head out if everything's a go,” he says before he even reaches the end of the stairs. I’m not sure if he can tell I’m in a rush or just knows me well enough to know I need to be with her. Either way, I can’t complain.
“Yeah. Her parents know you guys will be close, and I gave them your number if there's an issue.” I hand him a tablet that Spencer set up the other day. “Spencer set up the house and yard with surveillance equipment. It’s all motion sensors with alarms, so if anyone’s around, you should know.”
He clicks through a few of the cameras before he gives me a sharp nod.
“If anything goes wrong or seems off, call me,” I tell him, letting the demand ring clear in my words, so he knows just how serious this is.
“I know, man, this isn’t our first rodeo.
You’ll be the first to know. Now go to your girl before your damn head explodes,” Dom tells me with a laugh, but I know he’s got this.
He’s right. It’s not the first time we’ve taken on a high-risk project, and I know he can handle it.
He’s never let me down before; I’m just on edge.
I give him a nod and head back out to my bike, damn near jogging, while Dom and Tobias head to one of the cars to leave.
For now, I don’t let myself think about it anymore as my bike roars to life below me.
I take a moment, letting the familiar feel of engines rumble calm me before I speed off across town.
Ready to finally return the favor and stand beside the girl who’s been the center of my universe since the day she set me free.
