Chapter Sixteen

Basil Jenks

S tepping onto the upper crew deck of the Mystic Princess, I’m hit by a wave of salty sea air and the warmth of the sun on my skin. The cheers erupt around us, filling the space with a cacophony of relief and triumph. Faces, both familiar and new, beam with joy. It’s a stark contrast to the cold boardrooms I’m used to.

Cordelia’s there ahead of me, standing at the edge of the crowd, her eyes searching for mine. Without thinking, I stride toward her, my arms enveloping her in a tight embrace. For a moment, all the walls I’ve built crumbled. I breathe in her scent—salty, fresh, and distinctly Cordelia. For the first time in my life, I feel truly alive. This is where I belong.

Zara bounds up to us, her laughter infectious. “You should have seen Hal’s face when we pulled it off. Priceless!” Her eyes sparkle with mischief and joy.

Cordelia’s hand finds mine, squeezing gently. “We couldn’t have done it without you, Basil.”

Her words hit me harder than any business deal ever has. I nod, unable to speak for a moment.

Zara claps me on the back. “You’re part of the team now, boss.”

The sound of laughter mixes with the crash of waves against the hull. I glance around at my new comrades—shifters who trusted me despite my reputation. There’s Hal, grinning like a walrus who just found a fresh clam; his grizzled face is softer in this light. And I clearly see the kindness in his eyes.

The sun beats down on us, its warmth seeping into my bones. It’s like an unspoken promise of better days ahead.

“Hell of a team we’ve got here.”

“Damn right.” Zara grins from ear to ear.

We move through the crowd, shaking hands and exchanging stories. I’ve never experienced camaraderie in the cutthroat world of business.

As the celebration continues, Cordelia leans closer to me. “Let’s step aside for a moment.”

The deck is quiet, the crowd’s noise fading as Cordelia and I step away. The cool night air brushes against my skin, carrying the scent of salt and mystery.

We find a secluded spot near the railing, the stars above reflecting in the dark waters below. The laughter and chatter fade into the background as we stand by the railing, looking out at the endless expanse of ocean.

“I want to thank you.” Her voice is soft, carried to my ears by the light sea breeze. “For everything.”

I turn to face her fully, taking in every detail—the way her hair catches the light, the determination in her eyes mixed with a softer vulnerability.

Cordelia leans against the railing, her eyes lost in the vast expanse of ocean. I join her, close enough to feel the warmth radiating from her body. The silence between us is comfortable yet charged with unspoken words.

The sense of belonging deepens within me as we allow the silence to exist, let the sounds of the sea fill the space between us.

“This place… these people… they’ve changed me.”

Cordelia’s eyes meet mine again. “And you’ve changed us, too.”

I smile—a real one, not a calculated expression for business meetings or negotiations.

“For the first time in my life, I’m more than Basil Jenks, ruthless billionaire or strategic mastermind. I am a part of something bigger than myself.

“Your coming here… it brought out the best in all of us.”

I nod, my gaze fixed on her profile. “It did. It made me see things differently. Made me realize what’s important.”

She turns to face me, her eyes searching mine. “And what’s that?”

“You.” I say simply. “This place, these people... they matter more than any deal or acquisition.”

Her lips part slightly, surprise flickering in her eyes. I take a deep breath, my heart pounding with an unfamiliar vulnerability.

“Cordelia, I never imagined I’d find someone who makes me feel whole. I love you.”

Her breath catches, and for a moment, she’s silent. Then she steps closer, her hand finding mine. “Basil...”

I see the conflict in her eyes, but also something else—hope. His words pierce through my defenses, she must be thinking, filling me with hope.

“I love you too. I tried not to.” She looks deep into my eyes, tears brimming. “But no matter how much it hurts when you return to your life, I won’t deny the joy you’ve brought and the changes you’ve made in my life.”

Relief and joy flood through me as I pull her into an embrace. The sound of waves gently crashing against the hull is our only witness. Her body molds against mine perfectly, fitting like a missing piece.

“I’ve decided to invest in Mystic Cruises.” I lift a finger and gently capture a tear before it falls onto her cheek. “I can’t… I don’t want to leave you. And I realize you can’t leave here. You have a job, a destiny, and it’s here, not traipsing from boardroom to boardroom with me.

She pulls back slightly to look at me, eyebrows raised in surprise.

“I’m no longer interested in Mystic Cruises as a business acquisition.” I continue quickly, putting a finger on her lips before she interrupts. “I want to be part of this... world you live in. I want you in my life. And if that means I go where you are, I look forward to learning how to live on a cruise ship.”

Her eyes soften, and she places a hand on my cheek. “And what about your empire?”

“I can run a business from anywhere. But my empire means nothing if it doesn’t have purpose.” I cover her hand with mine and gently pull it away, dropping a kiss on her palm before letting go. “You give me that purpose, Cordelia”

She smiles—a genuine smile that lights up her entire face—and it takes my breath away.

“I’m making a big assumption here. And so, I have to ask now. What do you want? You have a new leadership role and it’s a big job.”

Her smile fades slightly as she looks thoughtful. “It is a big responsibility....”

We stand under the cloudless sky as the stars begin to twinkle into view. Wrapped in each other’s warmth, we consider the promise of a shared future. The dark, mysterious elements that brought us together now blend seamlessly with the romance blooming between us.

“Is it selfish of me to want it all, Basil? I did not dare consider I could have you. And now, the offer is on the table, and I want to grab it fast before you change your mind.”

“Nothing is changing my mind, love.”

She spins around, opening my jacket and inserting herself, laying her head on my chest. I pull my coat around her and we stand as one for a long moment as her shoulders heave and I hold her tight.

“Why do you cry, Cordelia? What have I done to make you cry?”

Her voice is muffled but audible. “It’s joy, Basil. I love you. The gift you’ve given me I can never repay. I stopped believing in love. Gave up on love in my life. And you gave it back to me.”

Suddenly, Zara’s voice cuts through the night air. “Hey lovebirds! We need you back here!”

Cordelia chuckles softly and gives me one last lingering kiss before we turn to rejoin our friends.

The future is uncertain and full of challenges—both magical and mundane—but for now; we have each other and that’s enough.

I am Basil Jenks. The man lucky enough to be loved by Cordelia Marin.

And it feels damn good.

The moonlight casts a serene glow over the deck of the Mystic Princess; the ocean whispers its secrets to those who dare listen. Cordelia and I walk side by side, hand in hand. It was a grand party and we are taking our time walking aft to her cabin, where I have every intention of ravaging her senseless while she does the same to me.

As we stroll, I catch a glimmer of light from the corner of my eye. I turn and stop short, pulling Cordelia up close to me. Two ethereal figures, shimmering as if carved from stardust and moonbeams, alight on the deck. They appear otherworldly, their forms almost translucent yet undeniably present.

Cordelia gasps softly beside me. “Basil, look.”

I nod, my gaze fixed on the celestial beings before us. The female steps forward. Her eyes are filled with galaxies holding ancient wisdom.

“Greetings, Cordelia. Basil. I am Nola. This,” she gestures to her companion, “is Caspian. How heartwarming it is to see you together at last. You hold the key to balance and your journey is only beginning.” Her voice is melodic and soothing.

Her words resonate deeply, like an echo within my soul. I glance at Cordelia; she looks both awed and contemplative. I squeeze her hand gently, grounding us both in this surreal moment.

Caspian’s presence exudes calm and wisdom. He steps closer, his eyes reflecting the deep hues of the ocean. “The magic you protect is vital.” His voice is gentle yet firm. “Trust in each other and in your destiny.”

Their presence is otherworldly, but their words resonate deeply. They seem to know us intimately, our struggles and our strengths.

Cordelia takes a deep breath, her eyes never leaving Nola’s. “What challenges lie ahead?” she asks softly.

Nola smiles—a sad, knowing smile that tugs at something deep within me. “Greater challenges than you can imagine. Your union is crucial for what is to come. It paves the way for a wonderful future.”

My mind races with questions and doubts, but something about their presence calms the storm within me. I turn to Caspian, seeking clarity. “How do we know we’re on the right path?”

Caspian’s gaze softens as he looks at me. “You already know... “ He reaches out and gently touches my chest. “In here. Continue to protect each other and this ship’s magic.”

The moonlight seems to shimmer around them more intensely for a moment before they fade.

Nola’s last words linger in the air: “Remember, balance is key.”

And then they’re gone. Dissolving into stardust that drifts away on the gentle night breeze.

Cordelia and I stand in silence for a moment longer, absorbing what transpired.

“We’re not alone.” Cordelia whispers, wonder evident in her tone.

“It appears not. I’ve never really thought much about destiny. But now… I’m thinking there’s more than a coincidence that brought Mystic Cruises to my attention.”

She turns to face me fully, her eyes filled with trust.

“And I could not be happier that you paid attention.”

We stay there for a while longer, letting the night’s serenity wash over us before continuing to where I will forever consider the heart of the ship to be—anyplace Cordelia lays her head down.
