CHLOE

Callum and Emerson are running the Chicago marathon today, and I’m reminded why the only thing I run from is my past.

I’m bored. I’m cold.

They are getting bananas, pretzels, and who knows how much alcohol while running, and I’m packed like a sardine against the metal barrier, waiting for them to run by.

I saw them at mile five and then again at mile eighteen. I weaseled my way into a spot near the finish. Slipping my phone out of my pocket, I pull up my text thread with Callum.

We haven’t gotten to spend much time together in the past few weeks—not that I want to spend time with him.

The Hayes has been ridiculously busy, especially for the Chicago marathon.

I’ve stopped by his office to drop off lunch, and we’ve exchanged a few texts here and there. He doesn’t stop, though. You’d think he was a racehorse with the blinders he has on. I get he wants everything to be perfect and successful—and it is—I don’t understand where the pressure is coming from. It’s not from Liam.

Run faster, I’m bored.

Could have more than that kiss if you ran faster .

CAL: I am NOT wearing this

You don’t have a choice. Emerson and I can’t be the Powerpuff Girls without Bubbles.

CAL: Seriously, Henry?

Stop acting like a Mojo Jojo. You’re supposed to be sweet and innocent.

CAL: I’d rather be a chimpanzee than Bubbles

But you look like her.

CAL: Is that supposed to be a compliment?

Get dressed. We’ll be there in 10!!!

Emerson left last night for London—bought a one way ticket.

I’m trying to convince myself that she isn’t leaving me, that this isn’t a goodbye, but habits die hard, including the negative thoughts you tell yourself.

Cal being busy is probably a blessing. The last month outside of work and Riley, I spent it with Emerson. Packing suitcases, visiting our favorite restaurants, binging TV.

November 2nd

Go get ’em, Tiger!! Don’t jump his bones too much!!

EMME: Please never say that again

EMME: BUT

EMME: Tiger is caught

Good 3 I’m happy for you

EMME: Thanks for listening to me talk about the same boy and situation repeatedly

What are girlfriends for?

I swipe out of my texts with Emerson, a massive smile on my face—because I am happy for her. Proud, but I already miss her. I didn’t expect to feel alone instantly—and pull up my thread with Callum.

The Eagle has finally landed
