Tyler drummed his fingers nervously against the steering wheel as he navigated the winding mountain road. Beside him, Avery gazed out the window, her face lit with childlike wonder at the spectacular view of pine trees and distant peaks bathed in golden afternoon light.

“Tyler, this is already incredible,” she said, reaching across the console to place her hand on his thigh. “I can’t believe you planned all this without me finding out.”

He smiled, covering her hand with his. “Five years of marriage deserves something special, don’t you think?”

Tyler had indeed planned meticulously—more than Avery could possibly imagine.

For months, this anniversary weekend had consumed his thoughts.

The secluded luxury cabin, the carefully selected wines, the subtle suggestions to their friend Ethan …

all pieces of a puzzle Avery didn’t yet know she was a part of.

“We’re almost there,” Tyler said, his voice steady despite the anticipation building within him. Years of hiding his deepest fantasy—watching Avery with another man—had cultivated an extraordinary patience.

The cabin appeared around the next bend, its large windows reflecting the setting sun. Modern yet rustic, it stood alone among the trees, promising the privacy Tyler’s plan required.

“Oh my God, Tyler!” Avery gasped, sitting up straighter. “It’s perfect.”

He watched her face carefully. At thirty-two, Avery remained as beautiful as the day they’d met—her dark hair tumbling past her shoulders, her eyes bright with intelligence and warmth.

Their marriage was good, comfortable even.

But lately, he’d sensed something missing in their intimacy, a certain spark that had gradually dimmed.

Tonight would change everything.

“Wait until you see the inside,” he said, parking beside the cabin’s wide porch.

The interior exceeded even the promise of its exterior. Vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, a stone fireplace, plush furniture arranged for conversation and comfort. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the mountain views while maintaining complete privacy.

“Tyler, this is …” Avery spun slowly, taking it all in. “This must have cost a fortune.”

“You’re worth it,” he replied simply, setting their bags down. “Why don’t you explore while I open some wine?”

As Avery wandered through the cabin, exclaiming over the king-sized bed and luxurious bathroom with its oversized soaking tub, Tyler checked his phone. A message from Ethan confirmed he was on schedule to arrive in just over an hour.

Tyler’s pulse quickened. Ethan had been the perfect choice—handsome, charismatic, and discreet. Most importantly, he understood the delicate nature of what Tyler was proposing and had agreed to follow his lead.

When Avery returned to the main room, Tyler had a fire crackling in the fireplace and two glasses of red wine waiting. She curled up beside him on the sofa, tucking her feet beneath her.

“To five amazing years,” Tyler toasted, touching his glass to hers.

“And many more,” Avery added, meeting his eyes over the rim of her glass.

For the next hour, they reminisced about their relationship—their first date, the disastrous weekend trip where they’d gotten lost hiking, their wedding day. Tyler guided the conversation subtly toward their intimate life, watching Avery’s reactions carefully.

“Remember that night in Cabo?” he asked, refilling their glasses.

A blush crept up Avery’s neck. “How could I forget? That bartender couldn’t take his eyes off you.”

“Off me?” Tyler laughed. “He was staring at you all night.”

“Well, you were the one who suggested we invite him to join us for a drink.”

“And you weren’t entirely opposed to the idea,” Tyler pointed out, his voice dropping lower.

Avery’s blush deepened. “I was very drunk.”

“But not that drunk.”

Their eyes held for a long moment, a current of unspoken possibility passing between them. Tyler considered pushing further but was interrupted by the sound of tires on gravel outside.

“Are you expecting someone?” Avery asked, her brow furrowing.

Tyler took a deep breath. The moment of truth had arrived.

“Actually, yes. I hope you don’t mind, but I invited Ethan to join us for dinner tonight. It’s been ages since we’ve all caught up.”

Avery’s expression shifted from confusion to surprise. “Ethan? Tonight? I thought this weekend was just for us.”

“It is,” Tyler assured her, squeezing her hand. “He’s just coming for dinner and drinks. I thought it would be fun to catch up—we haven’t seen him since New Year’s.”

Before Avery could respond, a knock sounded at the door.

Tyler stood, giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “It’ll be fun, I promise.”

He opened the door to reveal Ethan, who stood with a bottle of whiskey in one hand and a knowing smile on his face.

At thirty-four, Ethan had always possessed an effortless charm that drew people to him.

Tonight, he looked particularly handsome in dark jeans and a fitted button-down that emphasized his athletic build.

“There he is,” Tyler announced, embracing his friend with a warmth that concealed their shared secret. “Come in, come in. Avery’s just inside.”

Ethan stepped into the cabin, his eyes immediately finding Avery on the sofa. Something flickered across his expression—appreciation, anticipation.

“Avery,” he said, his voice rich and warm. “You look amazing.”

“Ethan!” Avery exclaimed, rising from the sofa with a genuine smile, despite her initial surprise. She crossed the room and embraced him, her momentary disappointment at the interruption to her romantic weekend already fading in the warmth of seeing an old friend.

Tyler watched them with quiet satisfaction—the way Ethan’s hand lingered slightly on the small of Avery’s back during their hug, the subtle appreciation in Avery’s eyes as she stepped back to look at him. These were the tiny indicators that convinced Tyler his plan could work.

“I can’t believe Tyler managed to keep this a secret,” Avery said, leading Ethan to the seating area. “I had no idea we’d have company this weekend.”

“Just for tonight,” Ethan clarified, glancing at Tyler. “I wouldn’t dream of intruding on your anniversary weekend. But when Tyler mentioned you’d be nearby, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see you both.”

Tyler busied himself with pouring Ethan a glass of wine, his movements deliberate and unhurried despite the anticipation building within him. “Ethan brought an excellent bourbon, too. We can open that after dinner.”

The cabin’s open-concept kitchen allowed Tyler to prepare the meal while keeping an eye on Avery and Ethan as they settled into easy conversation.

He’d chosen a simple but impressive dinner—steaks to grill on the deck, a sophisticated salad, and roasted potatoes with herbs.

Cooking gave him a natural reason to encourage Ethan and Avery to relax together while he worked.

“Can I help with anything?” Avery called after a while, making a move to stand.

“Not at all,” Tyler insisted. “You two catch up. I’ve got everything under control.” And he did. Every aspect of this evening was unfolding according to his careful design.

As the evening progressed and the wine flowed freely, Tyler observed the subtle shift in dynamics.

Avery, initially surprised by Ethan’s presence, had relaxed completely.

She laughed more readily, her body language becoming increasingly open.

When she spoke, she often touched Ethan’s arm to emphasize a point, each contact lingering slightly longer than the last.

For his part, Ethan played his role perfectly.

His attention to Avery was flattering but not overwhelming, his compliments walking the fine line between friendly and flirtatious.

When their conversation turned to memories of a beach trip the three had taken years ago, before Tyler and Avery had married, Ethan mentioned how stunning Avery had looked in her bikini.

“She still does,” Tyler interjected from the kitchen, giving Avery a meaningful look. “Even better now, actually.”

A charged silence followed his comment. Avery’s cheeks flushed, and she took a long sip of wine. Ethan’s eyes moved between them, alert to the shift in atmosphere.

Dinner on the deck proved even more successful than Tyler had hoped.

The mountain air had cooled to a perfect temperature, and the sky above them blazed with stars rarely visible in the city.

Tyler had positioned the outdoor furniture strategically, placing Avery between himself and Ethan at the rectangular table.

The arrangement made it natural for both men to focus their attention on her.

“This view is incredible,” Ethan remarked, but his eyes were on Avery rather than the scenery.

“It really is,” Tyler agreed, watching his wife’s profile as she gazed out at the dark silhouettes of the mountains.

After dinner, they moved back inside to the fireplace.

Tyler opened Ethan’s bourbon, pouring generous measures into crystal tumblers.

The conversation flowed easily, punctuated by laughter and increasingly charged glances.

Tyler strategically positioned himself in the armchair, leaving Avery and Ethan to share the sofa.

“Remember that game we used to play in college?” Ethan suddenly asked, swirling the amber liquid in his glass.

“Which one?” Tyler asked, though he knew exactly what Ethan was referring to.

“Truth or dare, but with a twist. If you refused a dare, you had to take a drink.”

Avery laughed. “I remember ending up very drunk playing that with you two.”

“We should play now,” Tyler suggested casually. “For old time’s sake.”

Avery raised an eyebrow. “Seriously? We’re not in college anymore.”

“Exactly why it would be fun,” Ethan said, leaning slightly closer to her. “We’re all adults now. No need to be shy.”

The look Avery gave Ethan was both challenging and intrigued. “Fine. But I’m not doing anything embarrassing.”
