The garden felt lighter after Zheng Yu's miraculous return.
The twins raced around the plum trees, shrieking with laughter, their grief already turning to playful scolding as they tugged on Zheng Yu's sleeves.
He grinned sheepishly, basking in their affection, though he was still pale and weak.
Yue Lian watched them, heart brimming with relief and gratitude, unable to stop smiling.
As they made their way back toward the palace, the twins and Zheng Yu darted ahead, their voices tumbling over one another in a contest of who could tell the wildest story about their "adventure." Yue Lian lingered behind, letting the sunlight warm her face.
She was just passing beneath the arbor when Cang Yan stepped out from the shadows. He looked different, tired, but softer, his eyes less guarded than she'd ever seen them.
He stopped her with a gentle gesture. For a moment, he seemed to wrestle with the words, as if "thank you" was a language he'd only just learned. "You... brought him back," he said quietly. "I owe you more than I can say."
Yue Lian blinked in surprise. Of all the things she expected from the Demon Lord, gratitude was not among them.
"I..." she began, but the words stuck in her throat.
She smiled instead, a warm, genuine smile that made something in Cang Yan's chest twist.
He tried to hold her gaze, but she was already off, chasing the twins and Zheng Yu, her laughter trailing through the garden like a blessing.
He watched her go, a strange feeling blooming in his heart, something like hope, something dangerously close to happiness.
Far above, in the marble halls of the Heavenly Realm, the three Grandmasters gathered around a jade table, their faces grim. The air was heavy with incense, but the tension was unmistakable.
A figure slipped into the chamber, dressed in the plain garb of a palace servant. He dropped to his knees, bowing low. "Honored Grandmasters, I bring news from the Demon Realm."
The eldest Grandmaster's eyes narrowed. "Report."
The spy kept his head bowed. "The healer... her power awakened. She brought back one of their own, a fox spirit. The palace is on high alert. Cang Yan will die to protect her. It will not be easy to take her now."
For a moment, only the hiss of the incense filled the silence. The gold-haired Grandmaster's lips thinned. "She is lost to us, then. The Demon Lord's grip is too strong..."
The words died on her tongue as a cold shadow seeped into the room, thick and unnatural. The air chilled, the lamps guttered, and all three Grandmasters stood as one.
From the far end of the chamber, the shadow coalesced into a shape, a swirling storm of darkness, eyes like burning coals, a presence ancient and terrible. The Grandmasters bowed, their pride melting into fear.
The shadow's voice was a rasp of wind and thunder. "You are weak. You dither while the goddess grows stronger, while the Demon Lord's heart changes. This cannot continue."
Without warning, the shadow flicked a single finger. The spy gasped, clutching his throat, and collapsed, lifeless, on the marble floor.
The Grandmasters shuddered. The shadow loomed over them, its intent unmistakable. "It is time. You will retrieve the goddess. You will force her to awaken. If you fail me again, you will share the servant's fate."
The shadow faded, leaving the scent of ash and terror behind. The Grandmasters exchanged uneasy glances, the weight of their alliance shifting dangerously.
"Prepare the ritual," the eldest Grandmaster whispered, voice trembling. "No more games. We bring the Moon Goddess home by any means necessary."
Back in the Demon Realm, Yue Lian laughed as the twins pulled her into a game, Zheng Yu trailing behind. She glanced once over her shoulder and caught Cang Yan watching her from the arbor, his expression unreadable.
She wondered if some new storm was about to break, but for this moment, in the sunlight and laughter, she let herself believe that peace was possible.
Above them, the moon was rising, and with it, fate itself began to move.
