The days shortened as the moon waned, and a strange quiet settled over the Demon Palace.

Yue Lian felt it everywhere: in the way the servants hurried through the halls, in the nervous glances the guards exchanged at the gates, in the way the White Fox Twins kept close together, their usual mischief subdued.

She tried to lose herself in routine, tending the gardens, checking on Zheng Yu as his strength returned, brewing remedies for the kitchen staff.

Yet she could not shake the feeling that something was approaching, something dark and inevitable.

Her dreams became restless, filled with glimpses of silver-haired women vanishing into mist, of shadowy figures reaching for her across endless rivers.

At night, she wandered the palace gardens, longing for the calm she had felt just days before. Sometimes she found Cang Yan standing beneath the moon, silent and still as a statue. They spoke little, yet she sensed his unrest as keenly as her own.

One evening, as dusk softened the edges of the world, Yue Lian found Zheng Yu and the twins in the kitchen, baking sweet buns and arguing over who could roll dough the fastest.

She joined them, laughing as flour dusted her hair and the twins pelted each other with candied dates.

For a brief moment, it felt like family, like something safe, something she could hold onto and never wanted this moment to end.

But the spell was broken when a bell tolled from the west tower, low and ominous. The kitchen fell silent. Zheng Yu's ears flicked, and he exchanged a worried glance with Yue Lian.

"That's the outer wall bell," he said softly. "It's never rung unless there's trouble at the borders."

The twins grew still, their eyes wide. "Do you think it's the Grandmasters?" the elder whispered.

"I don't know," Yue Lian replied, her heart pounding. "But something is coming. I can feel it."

That night, Cang Yan summoned his court for a council of war.

The grand hall was filled with generals, advisors, and envoys from every corner of the Demon Realm.

News had come from the Heavenly Realm: the Grandmasters were preparing a great ritual, one that would shake the balance of the eight realms.

Cang Yan stood at the head of the gathering, his presence commanding and cold. But Yue Lian saw the worry in his eyes, the strain in his voice as he spoke.

"They seek the Moon Goddess," he declared. "They seek to awaken her fully, to bind her power to their will. They do not care who is harmed in the process."

The room erupted in anxious whispers. Yue Lian felt every gaze turn to her, some full of awe, others of fear.

Zheng Yu stood by her side, and the twins pressed close. "You're not alone," he murmured. "We will protect you."

She nodded, but inside, a cold knot formed. For the first time, she was truly afraid, not just for herself, but for everyone she had come to care for.

As the council ended, Cang Yan approached her in the empty hall. He looked tired, the weight of centuries pressing on his shoulders. "This cannot last," he said quietly. "The Grandmasters will not stop. They will tear the realms apart to get what they want."

Yue Lian reached for his hand, and he let her, their fingers entwining in the dim light. "We'll find a way," she promised. "We have to."

He squeezed her hand, and for a moment, the world grew still.

As midnight approached, the palace grew quiet. Yue Lian gazed out her window, watching clouds drift across the moon. Below, the guards changed shifts, and the lanterns flickered in the breeze.

She didn't know what the coming days would bring. But she felt the tide of fate turning, the past and future pressing close. She wondered if she was strong enough to meet what was to come.

And in the highest tower of the Heavenly Realm, the Grandmasters finished drawing a circle of power, preparing to unleash the storm that would change everything.

The calm before the storm pressed down on the Eight Realms, holding its breath.
