Chapter 30

Chapter Thirty

BLAKE

I t never ceases to amaze me the horrible destruction that humans are capable of inflicting on each other. The way they can literally tear each other apart and leave nothing behind.

Not even life itself.

That some people can take a life without thought. Without remorse.

I don’t often see humanity at its worst, but tonight was one of those nights, and I’m sick to my stomach as I pull into the garage next to Harper’s car and cut the engine.

There’s a light on in the kitchen. I’d normally come home to a dark house, but my girl left a light on for me, and it loosens the knot in my gut for the first time in hours.

I need her.

I changed out of my bloody scrubs and showered at the hospital, so I didn’t bring that mess home with me, and I’m glad because I don’t want to wait long enough to shower to touch her. I need her now.

Walking through the mudroom and into the kitchen, I smile when I see the note on the counter next to a plate of cookies, illuminated by the soft glow of the light above the stovetop.

B-

Missed you today. I made you some cookies.

Leaving the cookies where they are, I shut off the light and carry the note with me to the bedroom, where I tuck it safely away in my bedside table and strip out of my clothes.

Harper is sleeping peacefully, her hands tucked under her chin, all that gorgeous dark hair fanned out on the pillow behind her, and I’ve never needed to get my hands on someone so badly in my life.

Slipping between the sheets, I wrap myself around my girl and pull her against my chest, press my nose to her hair, and just hang on.

“Hmm.” She nuzzles into me and loops her arm around my waist. Finally, my nervous system calms down, and I can take a deep breath. “You okay?”

I love her sleepy voice and her warm skin against me.

“Better now. Don’t wake up, baby.”

“Need to talk,” she whispers, burrowing into me even tighter .

“Is it life or death?” Christ, I’m tired.

“No.”

“Can we just have this for tonight?”

She blinks her eyes open, looking up at me in the moonlight. “Of course. Are you really okay?”

She cups my cheek, and I lean into it, soaking in her touch.

“Bad night.” I press my lips to her forehead. “Go back to sleep, sugar.”

With a sigh, Harper kisses my lips gently, then wraps her arms around my neck and hugs me to her, her hands in my hair, my face against her neck, offering me comfort in her sweet way.

“I’m right here,” she whispers against my ear, and it cracks my chest wide open.

God, I fucking love her so much.

“Need you,” I whisper, my hands gliding down her bare skin to her ass. “And I like finding you naked and warm in my bed, sugar.”

Rolling her onto her back, I press wet kisses along her jaw, down her neck, and cover her lips with mine and melt into her. This is exactly what I need to forget everything I saw tonight.

She wraps her legs around my hips, opening herself beautifully for me, and she reaches down to guide my hard cock to her already wet pussy.

“Christ, baby.”

“Take whatever you need,” she says, and I sink inside her, groaning with every inch. “I’m all yours, Blake.”

“Harper.” I start to move. Long, deep, steady strokes that fuel the fire burning inside me. I want to be gentle with her, to make love to her, but I’m on edge.

“I won’t break,” she says and nips at my chin. “Fuck me, babe.”

She doesn’t have to tell me twice. My hips move hard and quick, slamming into her tight heat, erasing the last of the shitty night from my mind. She reaches down between us and covers her clit with her fingertips. Her already snug pussy tightens more, and she starts to quiver around me.

“Come for me.” I pluck her nipple with my teeth, making her back arch. “Fucking come, Harper. Go over for me.”

“Oh God.” She fists the sheets, but I shake my head.

“Grab onto me .”

Her hands find purchase in my ass, squeezing as she falls apart beneath me, and I don’t try to hold back. I can’t hold back. I rock into her, riding out my own orgasm, so fucking grateful that I have this amazing woman in my life.

“Stay,” I whisper before I pull out and walk into the bathroom, get a warm wet washcloth. I return to her to clean her up, and then hug her to me. “Sleep, beautiful girl.”

“Are you okay now?”

I smile and kiss the top of her head. “I’m okay.”
