Chapter 1

SUNDAY – PRESENT DAY

Charlotte paused, eyes lingering on the old furniture in her Victorian house.

The creaky wooden floors and the soft hum of the space filled her ears.

It was familiar, comforting, and yet something was off.

Alex had just locked the back door, checked the security system, and was still lingering by the kitchen.

Something was different, something that gnawed at the edges of her thoughts, but she couldn’t place it.

Bailey, her ever-loyal border collie, was curled up by the stairs, completely still, but Charlotte had learned not to take that for granted.

She moved through the house with a heightened sense of awareness, her fingers brushing against objects, grounding herself to the space she once felt entirely in control of.

Alex turned, catching her watching him. His smile softened. "You really are the best at this."

Charlotte’s lips curved into a small smile as she picked up the last coffee mug, “Five daughters will do that to you,” she said, winking at him.

Bailey lifted his head lazily from his bed, tail thumping once before he closed his eyes again.

Charlotte felt a pang of unease as she passed the dog, but she pushed it down.

It was just the aftermath of the case. She'd been dealing with it for years. A quiet hum in her bones that didn’t quite go away.

She glanced at Alex over her shoulder, the faintest flicker of mischief in her eyes. "I think we both know I’ve got a talent for taking care of things... and people."

Alex chuckled, but there was something deeper behind his eyes. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in closer. “But if I’m being honest, you’ve been taking care of me for years now. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Charlotte’s heart clenched slightly, but she forced the smile back. “You’d manage,” she teased, though the hint of truth underlined her words.

She felt his gaze, felt the pull of his affection, but she didn’t lean into it. Not yet. She couldn’t.

Alex chuckled, leaning down to kiss her forehead. “I wouldn’t like it one bit.” He held her a moment longer, feeling her familiar warmth in his arms.

Charlotte’s eyes softened as she reached for him, cupping his face with both hands. “You know,” she said in a lower voice, “you look like you’re about to pounce on me.”

Alex couldn’t resist the temptation to tease her back, his voice full of playful intent. “Maybe I am.” He brushed his lips over hers before pulling back just enough to let his hands wander down her sides.

She gave him a look that was equal parts amused and intrigued. “I hope you’re not thinking you can just sweep me off my feet with a kiss and a few sweet words. I’m not that easy.”

Alex grinned, pulling back just slightly. He offered her his hand. “Come on, then. I’ll prove you wrong.”

Charlotte raised an eyebrow, her smile softening as she placed her hand in his.

They made their way upstairs, the old house creaking gently underfoot as they ascended.

Bailey followed them, his paws light on the stairs, but when they reached the top, he paused, looking up at them with those soulful brown eyes, as if asking if he should follow them into the bedroom.

Charlotte looked back down at him and laughed softly. “You stay here, buddy.”

Bailey gave a small, resigned sigh before curling back up on his bed at the top of the stairs, watching them with quiet, unwavering loyalty.

Alex chuckled as he opened the bedroom door, pulling back the thick covers of the large, antique bed.

The room smelled faintly of lavender and wood polish, the soft glow of the evening lamp casting a warm golden light over the space.

The walls were lined with bookshelves filled with well-worn volumes, the lace curtains fluttering gently in the night air from the open window.

It was an old room, full of history but still inviting.

Charlotte returned from the bathroom and slid into bed first, pulling the thick duvet down as she settled beneath the covers, the mattress creaking under her weight.

Alex followed, his movements slow and purposeful, savoring the moment.

He climbed in beside her, shifting until he was just inches from her, his body against hers.

They lay quietly for a moment before Alex reached for her hand, holding it gently. “You’re still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

Charlotte’s lips curled into a smile as she looked at him, her fingers lightly tracing his chest. “And you still know exactly how to flatter me.” Her eyes sparkled with affection. “But I think you’re getting better at this whole patience thing.”

Alex chuckled softly, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “I’ve had to. You’re a tough one to keep up with.”

Charlotte laughed, shifting to face him, her hand now resting on his chest. Her smile softened. “That’s not all it takes, you know. It’s not just patience.”

Alex raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “No?”

She leaned in slightly, her voice soft but teasing. “No. It takes someone who truly listens. Someone who knows exactly what makes me tick.”

Alex smiled, his heart quickening. “I think I’ve learned a thing or two.”

Her eyes sparkled with mischief as she pulled him closer, her lips brushing against his. The kiss started slow and soft before it deepened, the warmth between them growing with each passing second.

Alex, his body close to hers, felt the warmth of Charlotte's skin, the way she fit against him with an intimacy that had intensified with time.

Her body was beautiful, but age had brought certain realities—slower movements, delicate adjustments—and he had learned to meet those with patience.

The passion was there, but it required care and attentiveness.

As he moved, Alex felt her body respond. She took longer to reach that peak of pleasure, her breath catching, her body tensing before releasing. But he didn’t rush her.

He adjusted his position, careful not to press too hard, mindful of her comfort. She shifted beneath him, her movements slower but still full of intent, guiding him with the soft touch of her hands.

Alex traced the lines of Charlotte’s body with reverence, his fingers softly mapping the changes that time had etched into her skin.

He kissed the curve of her stomach, the place where five pregnancies had left their mark, subtle lines and gentle curves that told stories of a life well-lived, a life that had given so much.

His hands moved lower, grazing the silvery strands of hair nestled among the curly reddish ones. The marks of time weren’t flaws; they were part of the woman he loved deeply, and in that moment, he worshiped every inch of her, every experience that had led them to this place.

His mouth followed the path of his hands, brushing softly over the curve of her breast, suckling both nipples, then lower, tracing the gentle lines of her stomach.

Each kiss was a whisper of affection, his lips tenderly caressing the marks of time she wore so gracefully.

He kissed her softly, savoring the warmth of her skin, the way her body responded to him.

He settled between her thighs, propping himself up on one forearm while his free hand explored her body.

Softly, tentatively, he ran his fingers through her pubic hair, enjoying its silken texture.

She squirmed slightly, spreading her legs wider to give him better access.

He slid his hand lower until two fingers rested lightly atop her clit.

He circled his fingers, watching her face as her body warmed with arousal.

There was a quiet reverence in every touch, marking every inch of her as sacred, each feature a testament to her beauty.

Sitting up, he reached for the bedside table drawer and pulled out a small bottle of oil. He poured some onto his palm, rubbing his hands together briskly to generate heat. Once warmed, he drizzled a generous amount onto his cock, stroking it slowly to spread the liquid.

Charlotte watched intently as he prepared himself, her eyes locked onto his hand as it slid up and down his shaft.

Once satisfied, he set the bottle aside and turned his attention back to her.

He lay down beside her, propping himself up on one elbow while his free hand began to explore her body once more.

Alex captured her mouth with his before settling between her thighs. He hooked one arm under her knee, pulling it up and outwards to grant himself better access. With his free hand, he gripped his cock, stroking it lightly as he rubbed the tip against her entrance.

Words weren’t necessary as she tilted her hips and welcomed him inside her.

He pushed deeper, inch by inch, allowing her time to adjust to him. She felt incredible, hot, slick and velvety soft. When he was finally fully seated inside her, he paused, reveling in the sensation of her warmth.

Charlotte shifted slightly, guiding him with a small movement, letting him know she needed him to go slower, to be gentler.

Alex paused to apply more oil to ensure she was comfortable.

He kept his thrusts steady and slow, allowing the rhythm to build at her pace.

Alex was patient. He knew what made her shiver with pleasure and what took more time.

He focused on her, watching her face closely, noting how the tension in her jaw softened, how her eyes fluttered closed.

Charlotte’s breath quickened, but it still took time. Her body was responding, but the journey was slow. And that was okay. He knew she’d get there.

He kept his touch light, tender, giving her room to let the sensation build with a different pace. Her body tightened with the pressure, her hands grasping his back as her breath hitched.

“Let go for me.” His voice was barely a whisper, intent on bringing her the pleasure she deserved.
