Chapter Two

Gauge

This girl was going to be the death of me. She thought she was alone, and I tried not to watch her. I should be giving her privacy—I tried. Day after day I tried not to watch her, but day after day, I failed.

She was too tempting to look away from. With the way she came right on schedule every day, she was almost as reliable as a train. Some days she was quicker than others, but most of the time she came right as I burst from the tunnel.

I knew she thought she was alone, but it was hard not to feel like she was performing just for me.

Every day, the temptation to introduce myself grew stronger, but I shouldn't. Nothing about me was normal. She wouldn't want me. I told myself that every day. If I did meet her, things wouldn't go well. Despite being sure of this, I could feel my resolve weakening. I was miserable.

I wasn't being discrete about my feelings, either. Jamie had definitely noticed something was different. I wasn't sure if Rosie had yet, but since Jamie didn't keep their mouth shut, it wouldn't be long before Rosie knew.

I loved them both and knew how deeply they loved me. Neither would care that I was interested in someone else, but I didn't want them to learn I was hurting because of it. I was going to have to do a better job at hiding it.
