Chapter Twenty-Five
Emma
Seeing the look on Miles's face as I waltzed into the town hall meeting on the arms of Gauge and Jamie, with Rosie flanking us in her conductor's outfit, was only narrowly beaten by the look in his eyes when he realized I'd won.
He left the meeting abruptly, arguing into his phone. He'd called Daddy asking him to fix things, but there wasn't anything he could do.
The trains held historical significance to the island.
Years ago, the trains had saved hundreds of lives by moving people quickly away from floodwater on one side of the island.
The cars hadn’t been able to function in the water, and if it hadn't been for the trains running hundreds of people to safety as quickly as they did, many lives would have been lost.
Of course, it wasn't my trains all those years ago, but that didn't matter. The historical preservation committee agreed that the tracks, and by extension any train running them, were protected.
I'd shown Miles that he couldn't mess with me, my trains, or my island again and I was sure he'd be leaving soon.
The only thing better than the devastation on Miles's face was the feeling of being worshipped by Gauge, Rosie and Jamie later that night.
I saved them from having to leave their home, and they all lavished me in appreciation.
My island was their home, but it was becoming incredibly clear that they were mine.
