Chapter 16
Caleb
M onday is cold and bleak.
There’s a fresh coat of snow on the ground, giving the world a black-and-white quality.
But there’s still a substitute teacher at the front of Mr. Bryan’s painting class. Margo is out today because her foster dad was being discharged. How nice, right?
The weekend had passed quickly. We made popcorn and watched movies. Riley joined us grudgingly, at the behest of her best friend. Eli and Riley barely looked at each other, even though they were in the same room.
Note to self: find out what the fuck is going on with them.
As soon as the dismissal bell rings, I head to the parking lot. Liam, Theo, Eli, and I have somewhere to be before we head to practice. They’re gathered between Theo’s car and mine, laughing about something.
“Everyone in the truck.” Eli claps, grinning. “We’re gonna go fuck some shit up.”
“Excuse me?” Liam questions. “You didn’t say we were gonna have fun on this errand.”
I snort. “We’re going to find the vehicle that hit Robert and Margo. Our best guess is the junkyard. You should feel right at home there, huh, Liam?”
Liam shoves me.
I laugh and climb into the front seat.
