Chapter 2 The Decrypted Sin

POV: Roman

The heavy, soundproof steel of the security nerve center hissed shut behind me, instantly severing the muffled, pulsating bass of the gala below.

Here, suspended in the architectural spine of the Luvaris compound, the air was strictly climate-controlled—chilled to a precise sixty-two degrees and smelling faintly of ozone and hot circuitry.

I bypassed the standard retinal scanners, pressing my palm against the biometric glass of the inner sanctum.

The system recognized my vitals in a fraction of a second, the heavy internal locks disengaging with a satisfying, metallic clack.

I stepped into the dark, cavernous room illuminated entirely by the cold, blue light of three dozen holographic surveillance feeds.

Vosk stood at the center console, a looming monolith of a man bathed in the glow of the monitors.

He didn't turn as I approached. He didn't have to.

Vosk and I communicated in the spaces between words, a silent language forged through a decade of violence and absolute efficiency.

He merely stepped aside, offering me the prime vantage point of the primary screen.

My eyes immediately locked onto feed 4A.

Sienna.

On the screen, she was a vibrant, bleeding slash of crimson in a sea of grey and black.

The high-definition feed captured every microscopic detail I had spent the last two years obsessing over: the rebellious tilt of her chin, the frantic, barely concealed pulse fluttering at the base of her throat, the way the silk dress I had meticulously chosen for her clung to the curves she thought I hadn't noticed.

She was looking up at the now-empty mezzanine, her chest heaving with a mixture of triumph and naivety.

She thought the clock striking midnight meant she was free. She thought emancipation was a magical threshold that would suddenly make the monsters of the Vesperine District disappear.

She didn't realize that the only monster keeping the others at bay was me. And I had no intention of ever letting her out of my cage.

"Report," I commanded, my voice flat, betraying absolutely none of the dark, suffocating possessiveness that gripped my chest whenever I watched her.

Vosk didn't speak. Instead, his massive, scarred fingers flew across the haptic keyboard. He dragged a secondary window onto the main display, overlaying it right across Sienna’s face. It was a raw data stream—lines of encrypted code scrolling at a dizzying speed.

My posture shifted, the predator inside me instantly pulling tight against its leash. "A localized transmission?"

Vosk nodded once, sharp and definitive. He tapped a specific string of code, highlighting a repeating algorithmic pattern.

"Someone is broadcasting a closed-loop frequency from inside the ballroom," I murmured, leaning closer to the console.

The audacity of it was almost impressive.

The Luvaris network was supposedly impenetrable, shielded by military-grade countermeasures.

To ping a frequency from within my walls meant they were using analog brute-force tech. Old school.

"Isolate and decrypt," I ordered.

Vosk engaged the decryption protocol. The processors in the room hummed, a low, aggressive vibration that rattled the floorboards beneath my leather shoes.

For thirty agonizing seconds, the screen fractured into static, fighting the foreign encryption.

I watched the countdown timer in the corner of the screen sync perfectly with the grand clock in the ballroom below.

Eleven fifty-eight.

The encryption shattered. The raw code stabilized, translating the intercepted transmission into stark, plain text on the main monitor.

TARGET: MORETTI HEIR. STATUS: EMANCIPATION IMMINENT.

EXTRACTION PROTOCOL: 12:15 AM VIA EASTERN SERVICE ELEVATORS.

OFFICIANT SECURED AT SECTOR 4 DOCKS. CONTRACT READY.

DIRECTIVE: OBTAIN SIGNATURE. EXECUTE TARGET. ABSORB SHARES.

SENDER: NETHRA, J.

The silence in the room became absolute. It wasn't the peaceful quiet of an empty space; it was the terrifying, vacuum-sealed stillness that immediately precedes a detonation.

Vosk turned his head slowly, his dead, obsidian eyes locking onto mine, waiting for the order to tear the ballroom apart and paint the marble floors with Jorath Nethra’s blood.

I didn't blink. I didn't yell. I didn't reach for the weapon holstered beneath my jacket. Instead, a terrifying, glacial calm washed over me, numbing the edges of my vision.

Jorath Nethra. The charismatic, smiling Capo who had just dared to stand inches from Sienna, breathing her air, looking at her as if she were a piece of meat to be slaughtered for a boardroom victory.

He wanted to kidnap my ward. He wanted to force a ring onto her finger, steal her father's legacy, and put a bullet in her head before the sun came up.

I reached out, my gloved fingertips lightly tracing the glass of the monitor, right where the word EXECUTE hovered over Sienna’s digital projection.

A dark, cruel realization began to bloom in the back of my mind. It was a wicked, perfectly timed gift from the underworld.

For months, I had agonized over how to keep Sienna when the legal bindings of my guardianship expired.

I had run hundreds of scenarios, knowing her rebellious streak would drive her to run the second she turned eighteen.

I couldn't just lock her in a room without fracturing the delicate political truce within the Holdings.

I needed a legitimate, ironclad reason to strip away her newfound autonomy.

I needed a threat so severe that the syndicate would have no choice but to accept my absolute jurisdiction over her.

Jorath hadn't just given me a threat. He had given me a loophole.

Under the archaic, blood-bound laws of the Holdings, a disputed inheritance and an active assassination plot could be entirely neutralized by a supreme legal maneuver. A merger of assets. A bond that superseded all other claims.

Marriage.

"Cancel the strike team," I said softly, the words dripping with dark intent.

Vosk’s brow furrowed, a rare flicker of confusion crossing his stoic features. He tapped the screen, pointing a thick finger at the extraction time. 12:15 AM.

"I know," I replied, smoothing the lapels of my suit with agonizing precision. "Let Jorath’s men move into position. Cut the security feeds to the eastern elevators. Let them think they have a clear path."

I turned away from the monitors, my blood running cold and fast with the thrill of the trap I was about to spring. Sienna wanted to play at being an adult. She wanted to test the waters of emancipation.

"She has thirteen minutes of freedom," I murmured to the empty air, adjusting my cuffs as I walked toward the heavy steel doors. "Prep the penthouse biometric grid for a permanent lockdown, Vosk. And bring the syndicate magistrate to my private office."

I wasn't just going to save Sienna's life tonight. I was going to own it.
