Chapter 14
The days following the accident were difficult for everyone.
Marcus divided his time between caring for his newborn son and supporting Amara as she recovered from the trauma.
He felt stretched thin, but he refused to complain.
Lena, for her part, remained the steady presence she had always been.
She never asked for more than he could give.
She simply offered quiet support and understanding whenever he needed it.
One evening, after a particularly long day, Marcus stopped by Lena’s apartment to see the baby. He looked exhausted. The weight of responsibility and worry was clearly visible on his face.
Lena greeted him with a warm, concerned smile.
“You look like you could use a moment to breathe,” she said.
Marcus nodded and sat down on the couch. The baby was sleeping peacefully in the crib nearby. Lena brought him a cup of tea and sat across from him.
“How is Amara doing?” she asked gently.
“She’s trying to be strong,” Marcus replied. “But the accident shook her more than she wants to admit. I’m worried about her. And I keep thinking… what if it wasn’t random?”
Lena listened with quiet attention. She let him speak without interruption. When he finished, she leaned forward slightly and spoke with careful compassion.
“I can only imagine how frightening that must be,” she said. “To feel like someone is targeting the person you care about. Have you noticed anything unusual about her past? Sometimes these things have roots we don’t expect.”
Marcus frowned. “What do you mean?”
Lena hesitated, as if choosing her words carefully. “I don’t want to speak out of turn. But I’ve heard a few things over the years. Amara has always been ambitious. Sometimes ambition creates enemies. I just want you to be careful. For your sake and for the baby’s.”
Marcus looked at her for a long moment. “You think someone from her past could be behind this?”
“I don’t know,” Lena said softly. “I’m only suggesting you keep your eyes open. You’ve always been good at seeing the full picture. I trust your judgment.”
Marcus nodded slowly. Lena’s words planted a small seed of doubt. He had never considered that the incidents might be connected to Amara’s own history. The idea made a strange kind of sense.
“Thank you,” he said. “For being someone I can talk to. You’ve been a true friend through all of this.”
Lena smiled. “That’s what I’m here for.”
After Marcus left, Lena sat in the quiet apartment for a long time. The baby slept peacefully in the next room. She opened her notebook and made a new entry, detailing the conversation and the subtle seeds she had planted.
Everything was proceeding according to plan.
The next afternoon, Marcus met Amara at a small park. He tried to act normally, but the conversation with Lena lingered in his mind. When Amara asked what was wrong, he hesitated.
“I’ve just been thinking,” he said. “Is there anyone from your past who might have a reason to want to hurt you? An old colleague? Someone you had a disagreement with?”
Amara looked surprised. “Why are you asking that?”
Marcus told her about the conversation with Lena. He repeated the suggestion that the incidents might be connected to Amara’s own history. Amara listened quietly, then shook her head.
“I’ve had professional disagreements, of course,” she said. “But nothing that would explain this. I’ve always tried to be fair with people.”
Marcus nodded, but the doubt remained.
Lena continued her quiet work in the background. She made another call to her contact. She adjusted her strategy. She watched and waited.
Marcus was beginning to see the pattern.
But he was still looking in the wrong direction.
Lena smiled to herself as she rocked her son to sleep that evening.
The pieces were falling into place.
