Chapter 20

The second attempt came without warning.

Marcus and Amara had been staying in a quiet house on the outskirts of the city for three days.

The location was secure, with a private driveway and thick trees surrounding the property.

Marcus had arranged for additional security — discreet but professional.

They were trying to live as normally as possible while the legal battle with Lena continued in the background.

On a warm Thursday evening, they decided to take a short walk around the property. The sun was setting, casting long golden light across the lawn.

Amara walked beside Marcus, her hand in his. For a few precious minutes, they allowed themselves to feel something close to peace.

“I keep thinking about what our life could look like when this is over,” Amara said softly. “A real home. No more hiding. Just us and the future we choose.”

Marcus squeezed her hand. “I want that too. More than anything.”

They turned the corner of the house, heading toward the back garden. That was when Marcus noticed the movement.

A figure in dark clothing emerged from the tree line, moving quickly and silently. The man held something in his hand — a weapon. Marcus reacted instantly, pulling Amara behind him.

“Run!” he shouted.

The first shot rang out, shattering the quiet evening. The bullet struck the side of the house, sending splinters of wood flying. Marcus pushed Amara toward the back door while positioning himself between her and the attacker.

They ran together, hearts pounding. Another shot echoed behind them. This one came closer, grazing the ground near their feet. Marcus pulled Amara down behind a large stone planter as they reached the patio.

“Stay low,” he whispered urgently.

The hitman moved with professional efficiency, circling around to cut off their escape. Marcus’s mind raced. He had no weapon, but he had the layout of the property memorized. He knew there was a tool shed twenty yards away with potential items he could use.

“On my signal, run for the shed,” he told Amara.

She nodded, fear in her eyes but determination in her posture. Marcus waited for the right moment, then shouted, “Now!”

They sprinted across the open space. The hitman fired again. The bullet struck the ground just behind them. Marcus reached the shed first and yanked the door open. He grabbed a heavy metal rake and a large flashlight, then pushed Amara inside.

“Lock the door behind me,” he said. “Call for help. I’m ending this.”

Before she could protest, Marcus stepped back outside and closed the door. He heard the lock click behind him. He gripped the rake like a staff and moved toward the sound of footsteps.

The hitman emerged from the side of the house, weapon raised. Marcus charged forward, using the element of surprise. He swung the rake with force, catching the man’s arm and knocking the gun loose. The weapon clattered to the ground.

The two men collided in a fierce struggle. Marcus was not a fighter by nature, but adrenaline and the need to protect Amara gave him strength. He landed a solid blow with the end of the rake, stunning the attacker momentarily. The hitman recovered quickly and tackled Marcus to the ground.

They rolled across the grass, trading blows. Marcus felt a sharp pain in his side as the man’s elbow connected with his ribs.

He fought back, using his weight to pin the attacker down for a moment. He grabbed the flashlight and struck the man across the temple.

The hitman went still.

Marcus stood up, breathing hard, blood trickling from a cut on his forehead. He picked up the discarded gun and secured it. Then he ran back to the shed.

“Amara!” he called.

She opened the door and rushed into his arms. They held each other tightly as sirens began to sound in the distance. Help was coming.

“You’re hurt,” Amara said, touching the cut on his forehead.

“I’m okay,” Marcus replied. “We’re both okay.”

They stood together as the police arrived. Marcus explained what had happened. He gave them the evidence he had gathered. He named Lena as the person responsible.

In the chaos of the moment, with danger still fresh in the air, Marcus and Amara held each other and made a silent promise.

They would survive this.

They would build the life they both wanted.

Together.
