Chapter 22

Marcus had reached his limit.

After weeks of moving between safe houses, watching Amara live in fear, and seeing his son caught in the middle of a battle he never asked for, Marcus made a decision. He would end this on his terms.

He met with his team in a secure location and laid out the plan.

It was simple but dangerous. He would offer himself as bait.

He would reach out to Lena and suggest a private meeting to discuss custody and the future of their son.

He would make it sound like he was ready to compromise.

He would make her believe she was finally winning.

The team was hesitant at first. The risk was significant. But Marcus was firm.

“She’s been controlling this for years,” he said. “It’s time I took control back. We end this now.”

They spent three days preparing. They chose the location carefully — a quiet park on the edge of the city with good sight lines and multiple exit points. They installed discreet surveillance. They coordinated with law enforcement. Every detail was planned with precision.

Marcus sent the message to Lena that evening.

We need to talk. Just us. About our son and what comes next. Meet me at the park tomorrow at 7 p.m. No attorneys. No games. Let’s find a way forward.

Lena’s reply came within minutes.

I’ll be there.

Marcus spent the night holding Amara close. She was worried, but she understood why he needed to do this.

“Be careful,” she whispered. “Come back to me.”

“I will,” he promised. “This ends tomorrow.”

The next evening, Marcus arrived at the park early. He stood near the fountain, hands in his pockets, looking like a man ready to negotiate. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the grass. He waited patiently.

Lena arrived exactly on time. She walked toward him with calm confidence, wearing a simple dress and carrying a small bag. She looked like the same woman he had known for years — poised, intelligent, and in control.

“Thank you for coming,” Marcus said.

Lena smiled. “I’ve been waiting for this conversation for a long time.”

They sat on a bench near the fountain. For several minutes they spoke about their son. Marcus kept his voice steady and reasonable. He asked about the baby’s health. He asked about her plans. He made it sound like he was open to finding a peaceful solution.

Lena listened with quiet satisfaction. She believed she was finally getting what she wanted. She believed Marcus was beginning to see reason.

“I knew you would come around,” she said softly. “We belong together, Marcus. We always have. Amara was just a distraction. Once she’s gone, we can build the life we were meant to have.”

Marcus looked at her for a long moment. Then he spoke the words he had been waiting to say.

“I know what you’ve done, Lena. All of it. The emails. The rumors. The hitman. I know everything.”

Lena’s expression did not change. “I did what was necessary.”

Marcus stood up slowly. “It’s over. The police are on their way. They have everything. Your notebook. The payments. The communications. It’s finished.”

For the first time, Lena’s calm facade cracked. She stood as well, her eyes narrowing.

“You think you can take everything from me?” she said. “After everything I’ve done for you? After everything I’ve sacrificed?”

Marcus took a step back. “This was never about love. This was about control. And I won’t let you control my life anymore.”

Lena reached into her bag. Before she could act, officers moved in from multiple directions. They surrounded her quickly and professionally. She did not resist. She simply looked at Marcus with a mixture of sorrow and resolve.

“You’ll regret this,” she said quietly as they led her away. “One day you’ll see that I was right.”

Marcus stood alone in the park as the sun set. The trap had worked. The long nightmare was finally ending.

He took out his phone and called Amara.

“It’s over,” he said. “She’s in custody. We’re safe.”

Amara’s voice broke with relief. “Come home to me.”

Marcus smiled for the first time in weeks.

“I’m on my way.”
