CHAPTER 14 COMING BACK #2

"No," Eli agreed, his arms tightening around Jace. "I've read about it in old wolf texts. They say it only happens with true-bonded mates. That it's—"

"The ultimate proof," Jace finished. "That we're meant to be together."

They lay like that in silence for a while, still connected, both trying to process what had just happened.

The bond between them felt different now—stronger, more permanent, more real. It wasn't just a connection anymore. It was a fusion, a merging of two souls into something greater than either could be alone.

Eventually, they shifted so they were facing each other, though Eli's softening cock remained inside Jace. Neither wanted to separate yet.

"That was..." Jace started, then trailed off, unable to find words.

"I know," Eli said, reaching up to touch Jace's face. "I felt it too."

They lay like that for a while longer, just being present with each other, savoring the afterglow of their reunion and the profound connection they'd just experienced.

Then Eli spoke: "Tell me everything. About your mother, about the northern threat, about what comes next."

So Jace did.

He explained while they lay entwined, their bodies still connected: Sarai's initial anger and fear, her eventual pragmatic acceptance, the reality of being "other" in the pride now. He told Eli about Kira's support, about the northern pack's encroachment, about the scouts who'd been lost.

He also explained Sarai's suggestion of using their bond as a diplomatic channel—a way to coordinate defenses without formal alliance.

Eli listened carefully, his hands moving in soothing patterns over Jace's back.

"So your mother sees a potential advantage in our bond," he said when Jace finished. "She wants to use the connection as a diplomatic channel."

"She wants to use it strategically," Jace confirmed. "But I won't betray your trust. If you don't want an alliance, I'll tell her no."

Eli considered this briefly.

"An alliance might actually be good for both territories," he said slowly. "If the northern pack is expanding, they're a threat to both of us. And Kane's rival pack has been testing my boundaries too. Better to face those threats together than separately."

He paused, his expression becoming more serious.

"Can you ask her for a meeting? A formal territorial negotiation?"

Jace nodded. "I can. But Eli..." He hesitated. "If this becomes official, if we formalize an alliance, we're also making our bond public and official. There's no going back after that. Every shifter in the region will know about us."

Eli's hand moved to cup Jace's face, his thumb brushing over Jace's cheekbone.

"I don't want to go back," he said firmly. "I want to go forward. With you, publicly, officially, forever."

Jace's expression softened, and he leaned forward to kiss Eli—slow and tender and full of love.

"Okay then," he said against Eli's lips. "Let's do this. Let's make it official."

Eli smiled—a real smile, the kind that transformed his entire face.

"We'll need to prepare," he said. "If we're going to negotiate with your mother, we need to have a clear proposal. Defensive coordination, intelligence sharing, mutual support against external threats."

"And we need to address Kane," Jace added. "If he's connected to the northern threat, or if he's just taking advantage of the chaos, we need a plan for dealing with him."

Eli nodded. "I've been thinking about reaching out to Vera—one of the wolves from my old pack. She never abandoned me, and she might be willing to help. If we can get some of the old pack members on our side, we'll have more leverage."

"That's good," Jace said. "And I can reach out to Kira. She said she'd support us, even if it has to be quietly. She might be able to provide intelligence about the northern threat from the pride's perspective."

They continued planning, their minds working together as seamlessly as their bodies had moved in tandem. The bond between them made communication easy—they could sense each other's thoughts and intentions, could build on each other's ideas without needing to explain everything.

It was trust made physical.

They fell asleep curled close as full night settled over the forest, their combined scent filling the cave—a declaration of their bond visible to any shifter who might enter.

When dawn broke, they woke still intertwined.

Eli didn't let Jace leave the sleeping area immediately. Instead, he pulled him close one more time, his hands moving over Jace's body with tender possessiveness.

"Thank you," he said. "For coming back. For choosing me. For being brave enough to sacrifice everything."

Jace reached up and touched Eli's face, his fingers tracing the line of Eli's jaw.

"Thank you for being brave enough to love me," he said. "For learning to trust. For building this with me."

Eli kissed him—slow and deep and full of promise.

Then, as the sun rose higher, they made love one more time.

This time it was slow and tender, not desperate or frantic. They moved in tandem with the easy rhythm of partners who knew each other's bodies intimately, who could communicate without words, who trusted each other completely.

Jace rode Eli slowly, his hands braced on Eli's chest, his body moving in long, rolling waves. Eli's hands gripped Jace's hips gently, guiding but not controlling, supporting but not dominating.

They came together as the sun fully cleared the horizon, their bodies shaking with the intensity of it, their bond singing with shared pleasure and love.

Afterward, they lay together in the golden morning light, both sated and content.

"We should get up," Jace said eventually, though he made no move to actually leave the furs.

"We should," Eli agreed, also not moving.

They lay there for a few more minutes, savoring the peace and the connection.

Then, finally, they rose.

They bathed together at the stream, washing away the evidence of their reunion while their combined scent remained permanently marked into their skin. They dressed in comfortable clothes and returned to the cave to begin planning in earnest.

If an alliance was going to happen, they needed to prepare. They needed to coordinate defensive strategies, establish communication protocols, prepare for the formal negotiation with Sarai.

They also needed to prepare for Kane and whatever threat he represented.

The hard part—the external conflict, the territorial challenges, the battles that would test their bond—was about to begin.

But as Eli looked at Jace across the cave, watching him sketch out defensive positions on a piece of bark, he felt something he hadn't felt in years.

Hope.

Not just hope for survival, but hope for a future. Hope for something better than what he'd had before. Hope that maybe—just maybe—two predators from different species could build something stronger than tradition allowed.

Jace looked up and caught Eli watching him. He smiled—that bright, playful smile that had first caught Eli's attention weeks ago.

"What?" he asked.

"Nothing," Eli said, moving to sit beside him. "Just... I'm glad you're here."

"Me too," Jace said, leaning against Eli's shoulder. "Me too."

They sat like that for a beat, just being together, before returning to their planning.

The next step would ask for proof.

And neither of them would pretend solitude was safer.

For the first time, the cave sounded less like an ending than a return.
