Chapter 4

Rhodes

Briggs yammered on about how he was scheduling out a job, and I only listened with a quarter of my brain as I took in the property that I’d bought in a haze.

“Daddy, daddy.” Opal was running full tilt at me over the lawn.

“Got to go.” Hanging up on the man I’d put in charge of Redhawk, I let my daughter crash into me before swinging her up. “What is it, you little nutter?”

“Can we have ducks? Squirrels?” She raised her hands to my cheeks, squishing them together earnestly. “You love me, right?”

I nodded, knowing how this game went. “More than unicorns.”

“I love you too.” She cocked her head for a second and tapped her cheek, making her curls bounce. “But …”

Swinging her out a little like I was going to drop her while she giggled hysterically, I demanded, “But? But? Don’t you love me more than unicorns?”

“I’m sorry, Daddy,” she hiccupped in between giggles.

Spinning her around, we carried on for a second before I stopped short …

someone was coming up the driveway. East Holt’s crew was here to do some work, but they were all approved.

No deliveries were supposed to come today.

If it was Catherine trying to get in touch again, I was going to blow a fucking gasket.

She’d already given me full custody, so it wasn’t like she was interested in seeing Opal.

“Why don’t you go get a PB&J?” Setting her down on her feet, I turned to face the driveway.
