Epilogue
A month later
Wrath
I think the entire town turned out for the party. That day. One entire wall was lined with presents. The tables were divided into three sections. Bridal shower, wedding, and baby shower. Even the cake table had three different cakes. Lisa told us each cake is a different flavor that Millie loves. Hummingbird cake, chocolate fudge cake, cherry chocolate chip.
Instead of catering, her family and friends wanted to cook. They coordinated the food. Each person makes Millie’s favorite dish of theirs. Her grandma made the fried chicken, chicken gizzards, yeast rolls and a sheet carrot cake. A cousin made the only green bean casserole she’ll eat. While an aunt made her favorite deviled eggs.
In addition to those favorites, others made a plethora of dishes from breakfast to dessert.
We had a variety of breakfast sandwiches, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes with onions, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese sauce, bacon, sausage links, thick slices of ham, fresh fluffy diamonds, and yeast donuts from her favorite bakery.
In addition to the fried chicken, we had roast beef, half a dozen pasta dishes, more than a dozen sides, including mashed potatoes with two kinds of gravy. Besides the three cakes, there was a large dessert table with caramel apples, pies, cakes, cookies, and fudge.
Everest ate for days.
I walk up behind my wife, who’s just laid our infant son down beside his twin sister.
“I looked over the new house plans. Saber added the in-laws suite so your mom can be closer when you need her.”
She turns, standing on her tiptoes to bring her lips to mine.
“Have I told you lately that I love you?”
“Not in the last two hours.”
“You weren't home.”
“I am now.”
