Chapter Five
Nyrah
“Who was that?” Nyrah hissed. She was looking out onto the street where Cody, her Heartmate, had been chatting with a disgusting redheaded human.
“I don’t know, but I got her for you.” Yana cracked her knuckles and silver sparks popped and fizzled from her hands. “Twice.”
Nyrah growled. She appreciated Yana’s zapping, but that bitch deserved so much worse. She’d been clearly flirting with her Heartmate. It looked like she was about to hug him before Yana zapped her for the second time.
“Yeah, you got her,” Nyrah said. “But I wish we could go out there so I could rip her stupid face off.”
“Our transformation isn’t complete,” Yana reminded her.
“I know.” Nyrah pouted and grasped the pink gemstone necklace Temica had given each of them.
It held the magic spell that was slowly transforming them so they would look like humans, allowing them to help in the store.
Eventually. Temica said the change needed to be gradual, otherwise it’d be too much for their fragile mortal bodies to handle and they could die.
But she also said once the initial transformation was complete, they could switch back and forth simply by removing or donning the necklace.
Yana’s green skin had already faded into a warm tawny shade, but her pointy ears remained.
They would be locked in the apartment above the gift shop until the transformation was complete.
Temica had warned them that going out into the world could cause a panic amongst the locals and lessen Nyrah’s chances at winning Cody’s Heart of Gold, so Nyrah was dutifully obeying the witch-goddess’s wishes.
She had also learned that this was Cody’s homeworld, which made her want to fit in even more.
But it was growing more and more difficult, especially when she could see Cody walking about town.
He was so close, yet so far away. And she really liked his new look.
For some reason, he had cut his hair short and shaved his entire beard off.
Nyrah thought it made him look at least ten years younger, and about a million times cuter and more handsome than before. She wanted to talk to him so bad.
She growled again, and her hand went to her head.
One fluffy cat ear was gone, but the left one was still there, and she still had her tail, but her wings were already gone.
“I am getting sick and tired of this apartment! Especially when Cody is right there, talking to other women! She deserves to die.”
“I stopped their conversation, prevented her from hugging him, and I made her bleed,” Yana said. “Can’t we be happy with that for now? All this transforming is tiring, and I want to go to bed.”
“Fine. We will plot her murder tomorrow.”
Yana frowned. “About that. I’ve been watching the magic box. There are ‘shows’ called ‘crime dramas’ and apparently, in this world, it is very difficult to get away with murder. There’s stuff called ‘foreign sicks’ where they can track you down by a single piece of hair or a fingernail.”
Nyrah sighed. Systemica had also given them the gift of Speech Spell, so they could converse with the locals and watch the magic box. Yana seemed to do nothing but sit on the couch and watch the stupid box all day.
“So, what you’re saying is, when we murder that ginger bitch, we need to be extra sneaky?” Nyrah asked.
“Or we just don’t…murder anyone?”
Nyrah hissed and threw a pillow at Yana.
She didn’t understand! As a Heartseer, Nyrah had seen into many hearts; red ones, white ones, even hearts as black as coal.
Yana was a Red Heart, the most common. Most ordinary people had a Red Heart.
But Cody Hampshire…he was the first man with a Heart of Gold she had ever encountered.
It also didn’t hurt that he was the most handsome and heroic man she had ever met in her entire twenty-one years of existence. He had to be hers.
“I don’t want to go to jail,” Yana said, cutting into Nyrah’s thoughts about Cody. “Please, Nyrah. I don’t want to be locked away in a cage.”
“I hate being locked away in this stupid apartment!”
“So, let’s not murder anyone?” Yana smiled encouragingly.
Nyrah scratched at her remaining ear again. She wanted to abide by Yana’s wishes, but if this redhead woman stood in the way of her perfect life with Cody Hampshire, then she might have to take matters into her own hands. “I’ll think about it.”
