Chapter 32 Cameron
CAMERON
What’s this about?” I ask, still groggy from what little sleep I got last night.
General Nolan walks with his hands behind his back, a grim expression on his face as we pass through the hallway.
Why the fuck did he wake me up? I know it’s customary for the higher officers to attend the final trial, but Nolan generally doesn’t show. It’s beneath him.
So why isn’t it this time?
Nolan stops at a black metal door and punches in a code.
“We have a new serum that we think will be the end of all the experimental drugs for you. If you survive this one, we may have found the perfect concoction that will keep mental stability in soldiers as well as stop the lethality of it. The pills will still be required to work up to it, but I think I’ve worked out the kinks. ”
My eyes widen. “Are you serious?” I snap.
He glances at me over his shoulder as he opens the door. “I am. So let’s get this over with, shall we?”
I hesitate. “But what if it isn’t worked out?”
Nolan shrugs. “Guess we’ll see what happens.”
I follow him through another hallway that ends with a small lab room.
It looks similar to the one in the Under.
Once, this setting scared the shit out me.
I remember how my breathing was staggered and how terrified I was every time they injected me.
Everyone saw how the other men on test drugs died.
But with each treatment, I only grew stronger. Colder. Crazier.
I trace my fingers over the armrest as I walk around the back of it and take a seat. Nolan already has the needle prepped, dark gray liquid this time.
“It’s nice to see that you’ve been able to restrain yourself with Cadet Maves.
That’s the kind of control I want to see from you, Mori.
That’s the soldier we need. One that listens.
One that obeys. One that can control the craze that the injections give.
” Nolan’s voice is threaded with venom as he slides the needle beneath my skin and pushes the darkness inside me.
“Let’s see if you can control this one.” He makes it sound like he wants me to lose control. I gasp, looking down at my arm.
My veins turn dark blue and the darkness spreads through my system. My body jerks back in the seat and my breaths go rampant. Panic races through me.
“W-what’s happening?” I choke out before my eyes force themselves closed.
I only hear Nolan laugh before he says, “You’re prepared for the final trial, Mori.”
