Chapter 17
“Oh gosh!” I mumbled as I saw Patrick holding hands with his wife and child. I didn’t even know if I should let Nash know. If I did, I knew he wouldn’t have a problem hitting that man.
After a big breakfast Nash and I prepared together, we cleaned the kitchen. While we did that, we listened to a chapter or two of our Harry Potter book. I loved the way we bonded.
Since I was still out of work, we went back and forth from my house to his. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time at his house. Even Pinks had moved in. I think she liked it there too.
I felt Nash’s eyes on me, but I wouldn’t look at him. “Are you good?” he asked.
I nodded. If I said nothing to him, I’d feel bad about it. Plus, I didn’t want to keep anything from him.
“Uhhh, yeah. I’m good.” I nervously laughed. “But umm, I see Patrick, even though I’m not trying to be messy.”
He laughed. “Yeah, I know you’re not. You’re just remembering what I told you. Where is he?” He looked around for him, and I gulped before pointing Patrick out. “That scrawny ass man had the nerve to yell in your face like that?”
I pressed my lips together to keep from laughing loudly. “You’re too much, but yes, he did.”
“He’s lucky... Nah, he needs to hear what I have to say. I won’t put my hands on him, but he needs to know to never try shit like that again.” Nash let go of my hand and proceeded to walk toward Patrick and his family. He and Patrick stepped away from Patrick’s family.
I watched to make sure nothing happened. Nash then pointed at me, causing Patrick to look over at me too. I gulped but continued to look on. They shook hands before Nash made his way back over to me.
He reached for my hand and kissed it.
“What did you say to him?”
He shrugged. “Just know he sent his apologies to you. Now let’s do our last-minute Christmas shopping.”
I laughed. “You mean you do your last-minute shopping? I’m done, remember?”
Even though it took me a while to get Nash something for Christmas, I figured it out.
He scoffed. “Yeah, just rub it in.”
I only smiled. He still had to get a gift for his sisters and mother. Nash had shared with me that shopping for them was difficult because they were hard to please. I could understand that because I knew it could be hard shopping for me too. I’d say in a minute I didn’t know what I wanted.
My cell phone rang in the middle of our stroll around the mall. I retrieved it from my purse to see who was calling. It was a strange number, but it might be someone calling me back for a job, and I wouldn’t miss out on the opportunity.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Good afternoon. This is Charlena calling from Treat the Pets Vet Clinic. May I speak with Kenzlee Wilson?”
My heart thumped in my chest. This had to be someone calling for me to come in for an interview. Jesus, please let it be that. “This is she,” I confirmed.
“Hey! I’m calling to see if you can come in for an interview today?”
My eyes ballooned. “Today?”
“Yes, ma’am. If it’s possible.”
I nodded as if she could see me. “Yes. I can come in. Just give me the time.”
“Will three thirty work for you?”
I eyed my Apple watch and saw that it was two fifteen. I would need to go home and change into something appropriate. Damn it.
“Yes. That’ll be fine. Thanks so much. See you soon.”
I fought so hard not to scream and jump into Nash’s arms.
“Are you okay?” he asked, eyeing me.
“Yes, but we need to leave. I just got an interview!” I pumped my fist in the air, unable to contain the excitement that coursed through my body. “I’m still praying I get the job.”
“The job is already yours, baby,” he stated. “Now, let’s go home. You’ve got to change your clothes.”
A little before my interview, I walked into Treat the Pets Vet Clinic with my heart thumping wildly in my chest. I had no reason to be nervous, but I was.
Nash wanted me to call him when I got into the interview so he could listen in on what was being said.
That man was something else. I told him I had it, and I’d call him when I left the interview.
He sent his best wishes and kept saying I had the job already. That was all the confidence I needed. If my man knew I had the job, then I had it. Although, I knew in my heart the job was mine.
I went to the receptionist’s desk and was greeted with a smile.
“Hello. How may I help you today?” the cheerful woman asked me. She reminded me a lot of Kaye.
“Hi, I’m Kenzlee Wilson. I’m here for an interview.”
She nodded and stood up. “Follow me. I’ll take you to Miss Charlena.”
I followed behind her, trying to act normal. It was hard since I hadn’t had a job interview in five years. She knocked on the door and opened it. I pasted a smile on my face and walked in. The older woman stood up and greeted me with a smile.
“Welcome. Welcome. Nice to meet you, Ms. Wilson. I’m Charlena.” She held out her hand for me to take, and I did. I liked her already.
“Hi. I’m Kenzlee.” I took a seat in front of her desk as the door closed.
She moved papers around on her desk before she turned her attention to me. “Before we get started, I wanted to let you know that I got in contact with your old employer to see what kind of worker you were.”
Oh, hell. I already knew I wasn’t about to get the job from her talking to Rebecca. I had to delete that thought from my mind since she said that before we got started. Hopefully, even with her talking to Rebecca, I could still get the job.
“Oh, gosh,” I mumbled.
Charlena chuckled. “I don’t know how you stayed at that job as long as you did.”
My eyes ballooned as I stared at her with my mouth dropped. “Wait, what?”
She nodded. “That lady straight asked me what I wanted and why I was calling to ask about a person who didn’t work there anymore? I simply hung up the phone. I did, however, talk to Kaye. She’s a friend of my family, and she said great things about you. She’ll also be joining you soon.”
I was in awe of what I had just heard. This couldn’t be real. Was I even getting the interview now? This lady just said that Kaye would be joining me soon.
“Do I have the job?” I asked.
She nodded. “Oh, yes, ma’am. You do! Welcome to TYP.”
As much as I wanted to jump for joy, I didn’t. I was in disbelief at it all.
“Thank you so much!” I told her tearfully.
Charlena smiled. “You’re welcome.”
She spent the next twenty minutes or so telling me what was expected of me.
She also gave me a tour of the clinic. I was in love with what I saw.
This place was much bigger than the other clinic I worked at, and I felt like I’d like it here.
The good thing about this was that I’d start work tomorrow.
By the time I left there, I was all giggles. I couldn’t wait to get in the car to call my man. I unlocked my car door and slid behind the wheel, getting my phone from my purse.
As soon as I dialed Nash’s number, he didn’t give the phone a chance to ring fully.
“You got the job, huh?”
I giggled. “Yes! I got it!”
“That’s my girl. I told you that would happen. Now, come on home. I’ve got a steak with red potatoes waiting for you with a salad. You already know we have to celebrate with a bottle of wine too.”
The thoughtfulness of this man was out of this world. How in the hell did I end up so lucky to have a man like him? “You’re too good to me.”
“That’s the way it should be. Now come to me.”
I beamed with tears in my eyes. “I’m on the way.”
After I hung up the phone with Nash, I wasted no time getting home.
“Thank you, God!”
