Chapter 15

Tres Amigos + Jake Chat Group

Jake : Why did I just enter my office to find thirty bouquets of flowers?

Javier : I only sent three

Gabe : we may have planned it

Max : I sent fifteen, the others are not mine

Jake : Fifteen? Even you, Javier? How many did you send, Gabe?

Max : hey, I showed restraint. I wanted to send more

Gabe : I only sent three. That was the plan

Javier : Looks like you're going to have to check the cards to figure out who sent the rest

Max : I wrote fifteen cards, yes. Please read them all

Gabe : Happy promotion day, Jake! My mom is already preparing what's going to be an epic oncecita, like you asked. I think she's even making kuchen de nuez, your favorite

Max : Are you *trying* to make us jealous?

Gabe : Of course. Happy Monday

Jake : Is Gabe's office also full of flowers? He became CEO today

Javier : Don't deflect the spotlight, Jake. You know how we celebrated when the Board approved his project. He already got the party. Now it's your turn

Jake : You're all spoiling me. Thank you.

Max : Congratulations 3

Javier : See you on Thursday for the Gala

I asked Ryan to hold the calls for twenty minutes while I went through the cards. Max's ranged from for my token white friend to I'm lucky to call you one of my closest friends ; Javier's were more stoic, while Gabe had written only one.

Love you, brother. - Gabe

A big bouquet was from Tío Raúl and Tía Sonia.

We're proud of the man you are, and so fortunate to have seen you grow. We're lucky to call you our own, and that we get to count you as family. Thanks for joining us in this journey. - Raúl y Sonia

I blinked fast to hold back the tears that built in my eyes. The fortunate one was me.

I put their card in my shirt pocket, plus Gabe's and my favorites from Max and Javier, and kept going. The second to last set of flowers was Vi's; different types of flowers in shades of pale orange and pink surrounded by deep, dark green leaves. I opened the small envelope with the card, and read it with anticipation gnawing on my breastbone.

I've always believed in you. - Violeta

I smiled at the card, and tapped it against my fingers before adding it to my chest pocket. The question was if I believed enough in myself to believe in us.

Now that I was a VP, the clock was ticking.
