Epilogue

One year later

A year had passed since Gwendolyn had become the second keeper of the maze, and in that time, its labyrinth had become more alive than ever. It seemed to speak now more than whisper, and it called to those that needed judgment. Brought them to our doorstep, for her.

Tonight was special, it was our anniversary.

One year since we had found each other or as I liked to look at it, one year since Gwendolyn was called home.

If you asked me now, I would say that it was my destiny to meet her, that she was always the keeper of the maze.

It just needed a stand-in until she came along, and luckily for me, it liked me enough to accept me as her mate.

“Are you ready for tonight?” I called out to her, as she was out in the maze, feeling the soil and talking to it, explaining what she wanted.

“Do you even need to ask?” she replied, her laughter ringing like chimes through the air. Moments later, she glided into view, her ethereal form shimmering in the dusk with the moon starting to show. “Can you feel it?” her excitement bled out and I pulled her into me.

“Someone’s coming,” I said, looking at her with pride.

“No, someone’s here.” Gwendolyn smiled, her eyes now full of anticipation over the impending hunt.

With a shared understanding, we started to position ourselves at a crossroads the maze had built, a strategic spot where the paths converged. “Do you remember our first time?” I asked, glancing sideways at her.

“How could I forget?” She grinned, the memory lighting up her face.

“Tonight will be even better,” I promised, my heart swelling at the thought of her.

A voice shouting in the distance had us momentarily pausing our conversation. “Here they come.” There was a predatory gleam in her eyes as she gestured toward a faint flicker of light in the distance.

“Why don’t you zig, and I zag this time?” she teased before taking off.

Perfect mate, I thought to myself as I took off down the path that would eventually lead me to her.
