Chapter 8

Vivian
I’d known the moment Atticus had woken up. He’d been holding me, relaxed and breathing steady, then his body had gone still. Clearly he wasn’t feeling very sure about what had happened between us.
He’d offered to be with me to keep me safe, and he’d been incredibly kind, but that was kinda where it ended.
I hit the call button on my phone knowing I need reinforcements.
“I am not even speaking to you, oh you who betrayed me and went to the not-so-secret monster village without me!” Harry answers.
“I did and I’m sorry. Sorta. Harry, listen. I need some help.”
“Are you hurt or in danger?”
“No,” I say.
“Then I’m still mad.”
I get out of the bed and pace the room. “Be mad, just still listen, please.”
She sighs loudly. “Fine.”
So I recount the bug guy and Attitcus and our night together without sharing too many details.
“Was it good though? I feel like it was good,” she says.
“Unbelievable. I didn’t know it could be like that. He’s amazing.”
Harry sucks in a breath. “It finally happened. I knew it would someday, but I didn’t think… wow.”
“What? What finally happened?”
“You met your home, the person who will make you stay put, grow roots,” Harry says.
My heart pounds rapidly. If he asked me to stay, I would. I know that without a second thought. “I don’t know, Harry. We don’t exactly match. He’s this brilliant man, gorgeous and talented and so damn hot, and I’m, well I mean I’m hot in my own way, but even so, we’re mismatched.”
“Bullshit! What kind of monster did you say he ways?”
“I didn’t,” I snap.
“Just checking. My point is, he’s not perfect. Neither are you. No one is. But he just might be perfect FOR you. Don’t close your mind off to it. I can tell, Viv. I can hear it in your voice. You want to stay with him.”
“Well, he hasn’t asked me that. But we are going out tonight because that weird bug guy hasn’t left yet.”
There’s a noise over the line and I pause trying to listen.
“Harry, are you in the car?”
“Oh yeah, just running to the store really quick. Crap, I’m going through a tunnel.” Then she disconnects.
I roll my eyes, then stare at my phone. That was pure bullshit. Firstly, Harry, never goes to stores. She orders everything online to be delivered. Secondly, she doesn’t live anywhere near tunnels.
So she was totally lying about that. But she was spot on about me wanting to stay here.
