Chapter Twenty-nine
U pon entering the hospital, I pass the reception and enter my grandmother's room. The attending nurse looks at me with a disoriented look.
“I received a call. I’m her granddaughter.”
"Her condition is getting worse. Her chances of recovery are slim. The doctor who examined her determined that she should be disconnected from the devices," she says in a tiny voice.
"No, please don't." I feel my heart break as tears burst out. "You can't do that. My grandma has insurance."
"These are the doctor's instructions. "
"I don’t care. I need a little more time, please." I look at the calm figure of my grandmother and all I want to do is wake her up. I have to have her scold me one more time or make me my favorite pastry. To feel her warm embrace that always knew how to make trouble go away.
"Please. I want to talk to the doctor."
"He's not here right now, but I'll make sure you speak to him," she says before leaving.
I approach the bed. Taking Granny’s hand, I press a kiss on her cold skin as tears travel down my cheeks. “You can’t give up. Okay? You hear me? We are not quitters. We are fighters.”
**
“John,” I call, slamming the door behind me without care. I don’t care if he’s still asleep. The only thing I care about is the fact that my most important family member is lying in the hospital dying.
Crossing the bedroom, I notice the bed is empty and unmade, so I charge into the bathroom. I hear the water running as a big steam cloud covers my sight. I turn to the shower, only to take a step back. Even the biggest vapor can’t hide him. Not him.
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I close my eyes as I say, “John, you need to hurry up. ”
The water stops and I'm almost sure my breathing does too.
"Where were you?" John asks.
His words catch me off guard, and I start muttering, my eyes flicking to the sides, all to avoid his gaze. Don't show weakness, Hailey .
“Look at me,” he demands, and I do, my body shaking.
I find his cock hard and ready. Hot water drips down his body. Moving my eyes upwards, I appreciate every curve and every muscle and the small hairs on his chest until I find his cocky eyes looking at me challengingly.
“We need to do this,” I say as the heat of the room hits me harder than I expected. Seeing him naked is one thing, but seeing him washing himself and dripping wet is definitely another.
“Where were you?” he repeats, his voice stern.
Does he know that he has this effect on me? Does he feel it too? It must be the blood. I’m going crazy.
Get a grip, Hailey. There is no time for that.
“It’s my grandmother. It’s bad,” I whisper, feeling the tears in my eyes as I break down.
The thought of life without her makes me sick to my stomach. I need her to survive .
I’m not sure how he does it, but one second he’s in the shower and the next he stands close to me with a robe hiding his beautiful body. I sniff as he takes me in his arms.
“We need to do it again. We need to save her.” Sucking on my bottom lip, I fight back the tears.
“You know it won’t help her. The temporary magic is not powerful enough to revive her.”
Lifting my head, I look deeply into his eyes. “Then we need to continue. We can’t stop. Please!”
“Okay.” He nods, moving away and back to the bedroom.
