Epilogue
THE NEXT DAY
Reid
He swept up another pile of ash, trying not to think about what exactly that ash might be. “Did you have to do the burning thing in our bedroom?”
Kerak walked in behind him and slid his arms around Reid’s waist, pulling him close and pressing a kiss against the side of his neck. “Darling, the cleaners will be here tomorrow.”
“But it’s so…dirty.” The room was more than dirty. Scorch marks climbed the walls, and every piece of furniture had been damaged or reduced to ash completely.
Kerak snorted a laugh against his shoulder. “My love, that’s kind of the point.”
With a sigh, Reid set the broom aside and turned, looping his arms over Kerak’s shoulders. “Did you talk to Lenette and Derek? Is everyone okay?”
“I did. Silva has apparently taken over the Hunt, which is honestly a perfect fit. They’ll actually do some good in the world with a leader like him. Maren is well and catching up with her family. Calliope did say she expects a visit. She wants to see you healed with her own eyes.”
Reid smiled. “Of course. I’d love to see her when I’m actually conscious. And the mages?”
“They’re fine. Gavin is settling in well. The Seers still can’t see who’s been targeting carriers.”
“They’ll find them.” Reid scratched his fingers through the back of Kerak’s hair, earning the satisfied growl he loved so much. “And you, my love? How are you?”
Kerak tilted his head. “You’re here, healthy in my arms. I’m perfect.”
Reid’s smile was small. “He was your brother for hundreds of years. It’s okay to mourn him.”
A muscle jumped in Kerak’s jaw. “Perhaps I will someday, but not yet.”
Reid nodded and pressed a gentle kiss to Kerak’s lips. They were alive and home, and tomorrow, they’d start to rebuild.
