Papers. A sheaf of them, folded with the neat precision she had come to recognise as Edwin’s—crisp creases, squared corners, everything ordered by a man who considered his documents an extension of himself and treated them accordingly.
She carried the stack to the window and angled it toward the line of moonlight beneath the curtain, reading quickly and by feel as much as sight.
The first three were business letters. Names she did not know—one from a solicitor in Chancery Lane, the others from men whose addresses suggested they operated in the margins of respectable commerce, the kind of offices that existed on the second floor above something else.
The sums in the margins were substantial.
The language was the careful obliqueness of men who understood that correspondence constituted evidence and wrote accordingly, but the structure was clear enough: money owed, favours pending, a debt called in.
She read them and set them aside.
The fourth letter had Clara’s name in it.
Not at first. At first it was a letter about an estate—a modest one, she gathered from the valuation figure mentioned in the third paragraph, the kind of holding that would not attract notice at a Chancery auction but would represent a tidy sum to a man who had been patient enough to wait for the right arrangement.
The estate was identified only by county.
The beneficiary was identified only by relation.
The minor ward, the letter called her. The minor ward’s inheritance, currently held in trust, transferable upon guardianship to the appointed party.
She held the paper steady and read it twice.
Clara was not named until the fourth paragraph.
Miss Clara Vale, written out in full, the name she had been given at birth before the trial stripped the title from everything it touched, followed by a figure that Rosamund recognised—the modest inheritance their father had settled on Clara before the scandal broke, the one thing the courts had not been able to touch because it had been placed in trust before any debt was owed.
The letter was not addressed to Edwin. It was addressed to someone whose name she did not recognise, from someone whose name she did not recognise, discussing Clara as an asset to be positioned in the most advantageous possible household for the purposes of realising that asset at the earliest permissible date.
Clara was seven years old.
She set the letter down with movements that were careful and deliberate, because the alternative was to let her hands do what they wanted to do, which was to put the paper through the window glass.
She breathed.
Then she found the last document.
It was at the bottom of the drawer, beneath the others, written in a hand she recognised from the note he had sent her at Rath House—the one she had opened in the corridor, with Tristan standing beside her, both of them reading the same words about the truth of what happened to your father.
The same even loops, the same slight backward slant of a man who had been right-handed since birth and wrote as though the pen were an instrument he had chosen rather than simply the one available.
Edwin’s own hand.
The date at the top was eleven months ago—seven months before he had appeared at her parlour door with his warm eyes and his practised sorrow and his speech about grief and family and the bonds that survived even when the people who made them did not.
She read it in its entirety.
It was not a long document. It did not need to be.
It was an outline—the kind of thing a man wrote for himself rather than for others, to fix the shape of a plan on paper where he could examine it.
A sequence of steps, each numbered, each contingent on the previous.
Step one: establish the legal vulnerability of the current guardianship.
Step two: approach the ward’s guardian with apparent goodwill.
Step three: gain access to the household.
Step four: identify the precise nature of any attachment to the Duke of Rathbourne.
Step five: use whatever means available to dissolve the attachment.
Step six: bring the ward’s guardian willingly to a location where correspondence can be managed.
Step seven: initiate the formal guardianship proceedings once the Duke’s support is confirmed withdrawn.
Step five had a notation beside it, added later in slightly different ink, the handwriting of a man returning to a document after time had passed and something had occurred to him:
Barrow. Rathbourne staff. Dismissed for cause. Grievance still available if needed.
She had been right about the housemaid. She had been right about the dinner clock. She had been right about every small wrongness she had filed and set aside because the wound of the drawing room had been louder than everything else.
And beneath all of it—beneath the letters and the figures and the careful numbered steps—she had been right about the apology.
The fishing story, the brothers in Hertfordshire, the grey-eyed sorrow of a man who had made peace with his regrets and wished only to rebuild what time had broken.
All of it selected and constructed and delivered to a woman whose most persistent vulnerability was the grief she carried for her father, because Edwin had always been precise about pressure points.
His brother’s children had not been family to him.
They had been an inheritance he had been keeping warm.
She replaced the documents in their exact order, the precise folds, the squared corners.
She closed the drawer and worked the lock back into its seated position and took her letter knife and walked to the door and stood for a moment in the dark study, in the house that was beautiful and wrong, in Edwin Vale’s kingdom.
Then she went back upstairs.
Clara was still asleep, turned now toward the door, one arm extended across the empty side of the bed.
Rosamund sat at the foot of it and set her hand flat on the coverlet, not touching her sister, just present—the way she had sat through the worst nights of the past four years, keeping watch without being able to do the one thing she wanted, which was to make the danger simply stop being dangerous.
The difference was that this time she was not waiting for morning because she had no other option.
She was waiting for morning because morning was when Edwin would go to his study to check that everything was as he had left it, and find that it was, and settle back into the comfortable certainty that the woman upstairs had made her choice and understood her position.
And while he was comfortable, she was going to find the youngest footman—the one who had looked at her with the expression of a person who had been here long enough to be afraid and not long enough to be entirely broken—and she was going to give him Bess’s dress and a coin from her travelling case and ask him to do one thing.
She looked at her sister’s sleeping face.
I understand, she had written in the dark.
She understood now more than she had then.
Edwin had spent eleven months building toward this.
He had read her letters. He had locked the doors.
He had calculated, with impressive precision, how to get a woman who hated him into a house where her correspondence could be managed and her choices could be narrowed until the only option remaining was the one he had always intended.
He had not calculated Tristan Rathbourne.
Neither, for that matter, had she—not entirely, not with the full weight of what she now understood about what he had been willing to sacrifice and why.
She was going to get Clara out.
And then there was going to be a reckoning, of one kind or another.
She did not yet know which kind. She suspected she would find out when the carriage came up the drive.
