Chapter 51 Summer
SUMMER
Felix took his sweet time making biscuits in my lap before climbing onto it. I stroked the patch of orange fur behind his neck, activating his purr.
It was funny, I had barely seen him this summer.
I thought he would have chosen our house every night after I moved into the pack house.
That had definitely been his MO with the other girls.
Stuck to them like taffy. But with me, he only started staying over regularly after the hospital.
Seeing him curled up asleep at the end of my nest had been incredibly sweet, knowing he was watching over me.
“You didn’t do anything at all, did you?
Well, apart from all those pastries you stole from Mercer, but who could blame you for that?
” I mused. I began scratching the top of his head and his eyes fluttered shut happily.
“Don’t get me wrong, clearly you did great work with Olive, Ivy, and Lucy.
But I like that we figured it out on our own.
That we fought for our happiness with each other.
” My throat stung with unshed tears. “And I really am, Felix. Happy, that is. I never thought I would find a pack who not only loved me but loved my whole world, too.” I risked him scampering away and hugged him fiercely, on the verge of weeping now.
“Who would’ve thought I would get everything I wanted? ” I sniffed.
Felix’s legs bicycled helplessly, unsure of what to do with all my feelings. I laughed and set him down. He looked up at me, the star-filled night illuminated in his large pupils.
“Your work’s kind of done, isn’t it? You know you’re always welcome to choose our house if you get antsy again.” I gave him some chin scratches for the road. “You really are the best mayor. Sorry for crying into your fur.”
“Is he making you cry?” A stern voice called out.
My heart skipped at Mercer’s approach, Jae and Lucien not far behind. “No, I’m making me cry.”
“Well, stop doing that.”
Jae bent down to give Felix scratches, too. A tube treat appeared out of nowhere. He looked a little embarrassed as he fed it to Felix. “I just like to keep one on me in case I see him,” he explained.
Lucien was carrying my giant avocado. “Ready to go home?”
I looked for Felix one last time, but he was already gone. “Yeah,” I said softly.
The flashing lights and bombastic game announcements faded into the distance as we walked home. I yelped as Mercer dove suddenly and threw me over his shoulder.
“So I don’t have to watch your little legs trying to keep up with us anymore.”
“Why are you trying to get home so fast?” I asked innocently. “Is there something you want to do?”
By the time we crashed through the front door—with me still on Mercer’s shoulder, mind you—things had devolved rapidly. Panties pulled to one side as Jae ate me out enthusiastically. My ass wore Mercer’s handprint, and Lucien kissed me as I tore open his shirt.
It was probably for the best that Felix didn’t choose our house these days.
