Since therapy, I’ve tried very hard to be rational and respectful. But fuck that and fuck Juliana.
Sonnet had been in her room all evening reading all her mother’s letters, and Kai was just grateful that he couldn’t hear her sobbing and that her scent in the house wasn’t burning.
However, he missed her. Missed her voice, her smile, her touch.
He didn’t want to be seen as needy, but for her, he was.
He fought Felix to bring her dinner and won. Felix and the others have had enough time alone with their mate. It was his turn.
Sonnet was relaxing on her bed when he came in, and her smile almost made him stop in his tracks. He couldn’t stop looking at her as she ate and talked. He couldn’t believe he wasted so much of his life without being able to look at her.
He reached over and tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “You’re so beautiful.”
“Kai,” she laughed. “Have you even been listening to me?”
“Yes. I can multitask.”
“Mhm. Sure, you can.”
“You’ve been talking about writing a book dedicated to your mother. I think it’s a fantastic idea, baby. You know we’d all support you, too. See?” He sat up and kissed her cheek. “I can listen to you and admire your beauty at the same time. Don’t underestimate me.”
“Noted.” She leaned in and kissed him. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For being here for me. You’ve all been so amazing during this process. I don’t know what I would have done without all of you.”
Kai sighed and fell backwards onto her bed.
“I felt the same way when my mom died. I took it hard. I can’t even remember the months after it, just that the guys took care of me through it.
That’s what a pack is for,” he whispered, looking up at her gently.
“We alphas are meant to take care of others. No matter what happens in life, Sonnet, you’ve got us. ”
“You’ve got me too.” Sonnet straddled his lap. “Omegas are meant to take care of their alphas. I can take care of you.”
“I’m sure you can, baby.”
“I can,” she insisted, as if Kai didn’t wholeheartedly already believe her. “I’m ready to be an omega. I’m ready to bond with this pack and live a life together, even despite any ups and downs.”
Kai’s heart skipped a beat.
She’s ready to bond with us.
We’re ready, too.
Kai couldn’t help himself. He tangled his fingers into her hair and pulled her down towards his lips, kissing her deeply.
Their scents swirled together in the room, strawberry puree with melted dark chocolate, vanilla bean with cherry liquor, and powdered sugar with whipped cream.
The smell was intoxicating, and Kai was all too aware of his alpha barking for control in the back of his mind.
He went to pull back, but Sonnet whined. She wasn’t done.
A lump formed in the back of his throat. “Sonnet.”
She hummed, her lips kissing his cheek, down his jaw, to his neck. His hands fisted into her hair.
“Sonnet,” he growled this time. “You’re playing with fire.”
“Who? Me?”
“Yes, you.” Kai tucked his finger under her chin, so she was forced to look at him. “You’re not all that innocent, especially right now. I’m not going to push you into doing something you’re not ready for.”
Sonnet cocked an eyebrow, her pink hair fanning around her face. “I don’t remember being pushed into kissing you. I’m doing what I want right now. Are you going to let me or what?”
Wow. Hot. Very hot.

“Alright, baby.” Kai raised his hands in surrender. “You’re in control.”
Sonnet blushed and froze, like she wasn’t sure what to do with this power, but it didn’t take his mate very long to go after what she wanted. Which was him.
Sonnet nuzzled into his neck, scent marking him. Kai knew right away what she was up to. She was making it clear that she was claiming him, as if Kai ever needed the reminder. He was right where he wanted to be.
Kai scented her back, and Sonnet released a pleasing whine in response.
The sound alone almost made Kai lose control, but he and his alpha were on the same page.
Right now, each step, each moment, each second was up to Sonnet and what she wanted.
No matter how difficult it was to hold back, Kai was not going to ruin this moment by taking control of it.
Sonnet wasn’t shy about her current power any longer. She tugged on his shirt, and he took it off. She wrapped herself in his arms, and he held her. And when she began to rub against his growing, eager cock, he held still for her.

“Baby, if you take care of me, there’s no way I’m going to be able to hold back my alpha. Understand?”
Sonnet’s face turned almost as pink as her hair, and she nodded with a small agreement.
Kai was gentle as he flipped her onto her back, maintaining eye contact as he began to undress her layer by layer until there was not an ounce of fabric to hide her beautiful body.
And holy shit, was it hard for Kai to maintain control of himself.
Lying right in front of him was the holy grail.
A goddess made of gold and starlight; a human made with nothing less than perfection.
“What?” Sonnet asked, her hands moving to cover her body, but Kai stopped her.
He leaned down and kissed her deeply and passionately. “You’re just so beautiful, baby.”
She blushed a deeper shade of red and held out her arms. Kai embraced her, focused on kissing her everywhere he could, and listening to her heartbeat. When he felt confident she was ready for him to continue, he did.
He didn’t want to admit it, but he was nervous.
Touching Sonnet felt like touching something in a museum, but there was no holding back now.
His hands and lips were on her breasts quickly, kneading into them like a cat rather than a cocky alpha, and sucking on her nipples until he was satisfied with the noises coming from her mouth.
Then, while still focused on her breasts, he slowly tucked his other hand between her legs, tracing random lines between her thighs until she was shivering.

The cocky part of him hoped and prayed the others could hear her from downstairs, and that her scent was as thick as a fog in each room so that none of them could escape the fact that Kai was up here with their mate and that he was the one to make her feel this good.
Kai knew exactly how to make sure they’d hear her, so he didn’t waste another second.
He kept his eyes firmly on hers, watching her chest rise and fall, listening to the sound of her heartbeat drumming out the sound of his own.
And then, she grabbed the bed sheets and moaned louder than she had as two of his fingers slipped comfortably inside of her warm core.
He paused the motion of his fingers and leaned up towards her, nibbling on her ear before kissing her gently. “Tell me to stop and I will.”
“Don’t you dare.”
Kai laughed and kissed her long and deep. He kept his forehead pressed against hers, his lips a breath away, as he slowly and deliberately thrust his fingers in and out. He kept the rhythm the same, slow, teasing motion as he focused on her pleading and pleasurable whines.
His control began to slip as Sonnet arched her hips, trying to force Kai to go deeper and quicker, and what could he do? Refuse her?
Never.
Kai kissed her neck with fervor as he quickened the pace of his fingers. When Sonnet’s voice reached a pleasing pitch, her hands held tightly to the bed sheet and his hair. He knew he had found the right rhythm to give her the bliss she deserved.
Giving a low, restrained growl, Kai kept with the same motion as Sonnet raised her hips even more. “That’s right, baby. Let the whole house hear you.”
