Chapter 11

Caelan

Leaning against the door, I listened as Rowan paced up and down the hall, muttering to herself. She hadn’t been happy with how the night had ended. That was clear to me. Her eyes spoke volumes. Her face broadcasting her disappointment.

But I was not sure I could give her what she wanted. What she so obviously desired but was too scared to voice aloud. I could feel her internal struggle from here.

Her frustration. Her anguish. Her anxiety.

I hated that I made her feel that way. That I even could.

Hated it so much that I pulled open my door and stepped into the hall. “Ro—”

Her door clicked shut, cutting off her name before I could even speak it. The smell of defeat soured the air, lingering in the hallway like some long-forgotten trash.

Sighing, I sent one final look at her door before stepping back inside my room, silently wishing her pleasant dreams.
