CHAPTER 37

I n Manhattan, outside Justin’s dad’s business, the Erikson Animal Clinic, there was a charming Christmas tree with animal-themed ornaments that matched the clinic’s colorful mural showcasing joyful pets.

Inside, the clinic’s lobby was buzzing with a lively celebration. Clients had been invited to bring their pets. There were dogs, cats, birds, and even an adorable potbellied pig wearing a giant red velvet bow.

As Justin took it all in, his mom came over and put her arm around him.

“Thank you for doing this for your dad. He’s so excited to announce this new partnership.”

Justin nodded. “I know. He’s planned for this for as long as I can remember. He’s worked hard to expand the clinic. He deserves this.”

“You’re a very good son.”

“That’s because I was raised by wonderful parents,” Justin said as he hugged his mom.

Then they both laughed as they watched his dad take a selfie with the potbellied pig while several dogs raced by them, barking.

“Watch out!” his mom warned as a bird flew by, almost hitting him.

Justin jumped out of the way just in time. “Is it always this crazy around here?”

His mom smiled brightly. “Yes, isn’t it wonderful?”

Justin laughed.

His dad caught his eye and waved him over.

“I gotta go. The boss is calling,” Justin said to his mom.

She smiled proudly. “I bet your dad wants more pictures with you.”

“Do you think we’ll have to include the pig?” Justin asked, laughing.

“Would you rather we have a horse?”

“No!” Justin exclaimed in mock horror. “No horses, please.”

They shared a laugh.

“You know what, I take that back. Today, I’ll do whatever Dad wants,” Justin said. “This is his day.”

His mom kissed him on the cheek. “And it’s your day, too. I’m happy for you. I love you.”

“Thanks, Mom. I love you, too.”
