Chapter Seventy-Two

Brodie didn’t want to lie to Flora. But he kept telling himself that he had to.

There was no other way. It was absolutely necessary.

He just hoped it would be worth it. He had already apologised for being so off-grid this week and now he said he was going to be tied up with work over the weekend and probably wouldn’t see her until the following week.

He’d even briefed Jessica, should she happen to bump into Flora, that he and Reuben were working flat out to complete the Drymen project.

Flora didn’t need to know that they’d actually wrapped it all up by lunchtime today.

Brodie definitely had that Friday feeling of anticipation and excitement at what lay ahead.

Though he realised it was also a Flora feeling as he’d felt that way every day since they’d got back together.

He’d showered and changed and now sat on the sofa in his flat, going through his to-do list. His thoughts were racing off in different tangents and he had to remind himself to focus on the task.

He hoped Flora would forgive him for lying and that she would like what he had planned.

He’d been thinking about it ever since that chat he had with Reuben at The Clachan when he admitted he’d messed up and wanted to win her back.

His phone buzzed and he snatched it up, seeing the text from Flora. He held his breath as he read it.

Hey, was thinking of you. Hope you’re okay and not working too hard. I’ll miss you this weekend. Fxx

Brodie sat for a moment, his thumb hovering as he figured out what to say. He pushed away the guilt as he quickly typed a reply.

Miss you too. All going well and working hard. I wish I could be with you. I’ll make it up to you. I promise. X

He slipped his phone into his pocket, realising he needed to head off soon.

He did one last check, running through the list in his head to make sure he hadn’t forgotten anything.

His heart started to thud a bit faster. This was it and he couldn’t wait.

He just hoped that Flora would love what he had planned.
