Chapter 24
‘You have got to be joking …’
Naomi winced, having already anticipated Greg’s frustration at the news that they needed to vacate their room due to a water leak in the room directly above. ‘I told you this place was a bloody dump.’
‘They said it shouldn’t take long to resolve,’ she soothed, hanging up the in-room phone.
The apologetic guest relations manager on the other end of the line sounded remarkably like the same hapless staff member who’d diverted them from the pool area the other day, and Naomi didn’t envy the poor girl’s task at troubleshooting various hotel issues or keeping affected guests happy.
She knew Greg would be especially annoyed – or, in truth, downright apoplectic – by the interruption, since he’d planned to spend most of the day doing whatever it was needed doing for work.
As it was, the suite was beginning to look more like an office workplace these days, with all the paperwork, file folders, and various electronic devices strewn around.
‘Maybe it’s even a blessing in disguise?’ she suggested, her tone light. ‘The perfect excuse to ditch the office and come with us and we can all grab a bite somewhere nice after the gallery visit.’
‘I don’t want to go off on another blasted tour today, Naomi. I already said I’ve got work to do.’
She took a deep breath, warning herself not to start nagging again. Granted, he’d grumbled throughout most of the trip so far, but she needed to remember that he had arranged to bring them all here in the first place.
Hopefully for a very good reason.
Then she thought of something. ‘OK, then, why don’t we ask Sam if you can use her room to work in instead? She’s further down the hall than the rest of us, so by rights, the leak shouldn’t affect her.’
She would’ve suggested her sisters or her parents’ room either, but there were only a couple of others between this one and the girls’ and her folks were so particular about everything she knew they would baulk at anyone else amid all their stuff.
Sam may well feel the same, but she guessed her friend might do them the favour, for Naomi’s sake at least?
Plus to be safer than sorry, she’d already intended to ask Sam if she could move some of her clothes there; namely her birthday dress in particular – just in case the leak turned out to be more serious than anticipated.
Naomi sent her friend a quick text, letting her know of the situation and Sam replied almost immediately.
No problem. Just gimme a minute to sneak out my secret gigolo ;)
Giving Greg the good news, and getting a relieved glance in return, Naomi readied herself for her afternoon outing.
